Be careful to only read about the quests you're currently working on! TRANSLATION NOTES: I usually use the American translations of things, but from time to time I mention Seiken Densetsu. This is the Japanese name of the series from which this game originates, if you didn't know. Seiken Densetsu 1 was Final Fantasy Adventure in the US, Seiken Densetsu 2 was Secret of Mana, and Seiken Densetsu 3 never reached the US. Seiken Densetsu roughly means Legend of the Holy Sword. Well, this is mine. I've taken a much different (and useful) approach in this sucker. Instead of telling only the most basic information, which tends to be obvious to the 10th degree in very short order, I've also included information that's truly of use to a player who's never messed with these things (as I myself was, not too long ago). As such, they are listed according to the Cactus Diaries (found upstairs in Home, on the leaves hanging on the post). After each quest, you can tell Li'l Cactus about them (he's sitting right next to your bed, and is, appropriately, a little cactus with a red flower on his head), and he'll record them in his diary. Note that if you are planning to fill up the Cactus Diaries, you MUST tell Li'l Cactus about any adventure you do before completing any other ones, or you won't be able to tell him about it until you do it again in a New Game + game (or at all, if it's a one- time quest you miss). The first section here isn't an actual quest, but rather, a guide of how to get to the quests themselves. Another note: Quests that give you AF's often give two AF's, but ONLY if you have 2 or less AF's in your inventory when you finish the quest. If you've already gotten the main AF that the quest would otherwise give you, you'll get a metal as a reward instead of AF's. See the Putting Down Lands section for complete details. Final note: Some quests have two names listed: their official chapter title, and the name given in the Cactus Diaries. Only the Cactus Diary names that aren't very similar to the original names of the quests are listed. ---------- Awakening [WAWAKEN] ---------- The game starts out by letting you select a character gender and initial weapon. Do so now (for beginners, I suggest the Spear as a weapon), and then you'll get to select a region of the world to start in. Select whatever seems most appealing to you, and then you'll be deposited on your very own world map! An empty world map, too. Do as the game says, and place the Mailbox somewhere on the map (anywhere will do, really, but I suggest a corner; that way, enemies get stronger in later dungeons, and you can get better items at shops in towns, too). This is how you place artifacts, and it's important that you learn this now, since you'll have to put down a lot of artifacts in the course of any given play-through. Location: Home Items: 100 Lucre After the opening FMV (which you can skip if you want by pressing X), you'll be upstairs in your home. This is your base of operations, so you may want to get familiar with it. The top floor sports Li'l Cactus (who you can tell all about your adventures), your bed (which lets you save and set 2P controls), and the Cactus Diaries (the leaves next to the stairwell). Downstairs, you'll find a chest with 100 Lucre in it to the left of the fireplace, and in the door to the right is your study. The study contains all of the encyclopedias you have, and the collection will grow as you progress through the game's events. Go ahead and go outside now. From the main path, there's an empty field to the southwest, the workshops are to the west, the monster corral is to the east, and finally, the exit is straight down the path to the southeast. If you're playing a first-time game, you don't have any workshops yet, nor can you catch monsters, so you won't have to worry about those areas just yet. Also, there's a Sproutling walking around near the entrance of your home. Talk to him and answer him however you want to. He'll give you your first AF (artifact), the Colorblocks. Go ahead and leave home. On the world map, place the Colorblocks somewhere around your home (it's the only place you can put it; AF's can only be placed near Lands that have already been put down). Go ahead and visit Domina. Location: Domina Items: Equipment Encyclopedia, Item Encyclopedia Head into the center of Domina, and watch as an onion-wearing... thing has a short fight with a strange man called Elazul. Go ahead and visit the shop that the onion-head is heading for, and talk to the strange bug-man sitting in the chair there to get the Equipment Encyclopedia. Head back out of the shop (you can buy some armor here if you want, but it's really not needed just yet) and now you have a choice: you can either go into the pub immediately and confront Elazul, or you can go up to the square and see Niccolo. If you're going to do the former, see the next paragraph. If you're going to do the latter, see the paragraph after that. Hey, this is sort of like choose your own adventure! Aheheh, anyway... Inside the pub, Elazul's picking on some poor girl who looks rather like a faerie. Stick up for her or ask Elazul what's going on (either will work), and offer to help Elazul out. You'll get the AF Jade Egg, and Elazul will join you. Head back out to the world map. See the quest The Lost Princess for what to do next. In the marketplace, Niccolo will be wandering about. Talk to him, and tell him no, and then say yes. Go back to the shop you visited earlier, and talk to the gigantic teapot there. With the AF Wheel in hand, return to the world map. See the quest Niccolo's Business Unusual for what to do next. --------------------------- Niccolo's Business Unusual (Nic's Business) [WNICCOLO] --------------------------- Requirements: Talk to Niccolo in Domina, get AF Wheel AF Earned: Flame Second AF: Medallion Place the AF Wheel somewhere on the map, and enter the Luon Highway. If you've done The Lost Princess already, you may see Pearl here. Talk to her and tell her whatever you want (or don't; it doesn't really matter either way). Head on into the main area of the highway, and fight your way down to the first fork. Use the sprite statue here if you want, and talk to the cat woman here (again, only if you want to). Head up the northeast path, and follow it to the end. At the end of the path, you'll see two Chobin Hoods demanding money. Give 'em candy, and prepare for a boss fight! The Mantis Ant is not exactly the toughest boss ever, given that it's meant to be one of the first you face. Attack it repeatedly for best results. Its specials are all frontal attacks, so if it starts flickering, wait for it to stop flickering, and get behind it. Eventually, you'll wear it down to 0 HP, and get your gems and Lucre. After the fight, Niccolo will give you a Tako Bug, Greenball Bun, and IronPot (GranzSteel Helmet) for 300 Lucre (you have no choice here), your AF/metal reward, and then run off. --------------------- The Little Sorcerers (Tiny Sorcerers) [WLITTLE] --------------------- Requirements: Complete Nic's Business or Lost Princess, return to Home, enter it, and then leave the house Amalette, the mail-delivering pelican, will tell you that "hairy-scary" pumpkins have taken over the western end of Domina. Head on out to Domina, and go to the far west side of town, all the way to the part that's normally a dead end. Two young wizards are there, and upon approaching them, you'll have to fight them. Bud and Lisa aren't very difficult. Get rid of Lisa first, as she has the more powerful magic. Once she's down, Bud's a simple thwack-repeatedly fight. You really don't have a choice after the fight, so make them both your apprentices. Now you can recruit either Bud or Lisa as party members from your home's living room. -------------------- The Wisdom of Gaeus (Gaeus's Wisdom) [WWISDOM] -------------------- Requirements: Complete Nic's Business, haven't visited Gato yet Visit the inn at Domina, and talk to the woman in the lower left bedroom. Answer her first question however you wish, and tell her that the soul lives on as an answer to her second question. Now, head back to the Luon Highway, and make your way down the lower fork this time. Go down the straight path to the second path, and keep east. Follow the path the rest of the way, and you will find yourself at Gaeus, one of the six Wisdoms. After he and Daena have a nice little chat, you'll be rewarded with a ForbiddenRing. --------------- Where's Putty? [WPUTTY] --------------- Requirements: Complete Mining Business, have Pirate's Hook and Rusty Anchor placed, Catchin' Lilipeas must not be complete Visit the Diggers' hideout in the Ulkan Mines (via the Dudbear Express sign, for fastest results), and watch the scene here. Leave the mines, and board the S.S. Bucaneer. Go down belowdecks, to the third level of the ship. Talk to the moving barrel to free Putty! Now, talk to Captain Tusk on the bridge, and tell him no. Head for Polpota, and go to the beaches on the northeast side of town. Talk to Putty there to end this quest. ------------------ The Lost Princess [WPRINCESS] ------------------ Requirements: Talk to Elazul in Domina and get the AF Jade Egg, Glass Tower must not be complete AF Earned: Stone Eye Second AF: Firefly Lamp On the world map, place the Jade Egg somewhere to form the Mekiv Caverns. Go ahead and enter them. The caverns are fairly twisting, but the path you want to take is the upper path, then head downwards along the forks, until you reach an area with a sub- level. Go down below, and follow the lower area to the west. Keep south and west, and before long, you should reach a room with a strangely-dressed woman (unless you've already placed the Flame). Talk to her if you want, or just go into the next room. Now, you'll have to fight a boss. Du'Inke is a pretty easy boss. Attack him relentlessly when he's not flickering, and when he does start to flicker, move out of his way so his special attacks don't hit you. Behind him is safest, since his attacks are mostly frontal, and his one long-range attack doesn't usually hit near him. Killing him should not prove difficult. After the oversized ape is down, Elazul will find Pearl, and you'll get your reward AF(s) or metal. ---------------- Diddle's Letter [WLETTER] ---------------- Requirements: Complete Tiny Sorcerers and Nic's Business To start this quest, talk to the strange monkey-boy with the gramophone on his back in the park of Domina. Talk to the other monkey, then follow the other guy. Check all the way over on the western end of Domina, then return to the park. Talk to the monkey, then talk to the Sproutling outside the inn. Go into the inn, then go back to the western area of Domina. Just beyond the park, you should find Capella (the juggling monkey). Talk to him, watch the amusing scene, and then leave the area. Go back, and talk to the pelican for a hint on what to do now. Go to Luon Highway, and talk to the Boink to be teleported to the second fork of the highway. Go check out the letter, and tell Capella whatever you want to tell him. Go down the lower part of the fork, and follow it to the Cave of Chobin Hoods. Diddle will show up. Tell the truth to him, and then enter the cave. Feel free to explore a bit, the cave is small, and there are a few items in it. Once you find Capella, talk to him, and then go up the stairs on the left side of the room he's in to fight Giga Rex. Giga's not a very tough boss, he's just a palette-swap of a Tyrannos. He does all the same stuff as a Tyrannos, and is stunned by attacks just as easily. Do a chain of blows on him to finish him fast. After the boss fight, Diddle and Capella make up, and you're given a piece of Gator Skin. ------------ Two Torches [WTORCHES] ------------ Requirements: Complete Flame of Hope and Murmuring Forest AF Earned: Stone Eye Return to Gato, and go up to the Temple of Healing. Talk to Daena (the cat woman guarding the door in the upper area of the temple), and go into the Meditation Room, and watch the scenes. Talk to Daena if you want to learn more about Irwin and Escad, and talk to Matilda, as well. Leave the room, and then enter again. Now, leave the temple entirely, and head for the Pathways of Asceticism. If you didn't bring any allies with you, Daena will offer to take you to the secret room. Tell her yes, it makes things so much simpler. If you took an ally with you to Gato, or you told Daena no, then you'll have to find the meditation room yourself. The entrance is a bit hidden, and I'm not quite sure how to direct you as to where it is, but once you find a stairway that leads up to an entrance with no light pouring out of the door, you've found it. Anyway, once you enter the room, you'll have to fight Spriggan. Spriggan is a mean ghost, have no doubt. Whenever Spriggan starts flickering, head for the small alcove where there's no red carpet, so that Spriggan's rolling carpet attack doesn't put you to sleep. Attack Spriggan with any aerial attacks you may have, or simply focus on doing attack chains to her. Although Spriggan is annoying, her attacks are easy enough to avoid, and she doesn't last long. After the battle, you'll get your reward AF/metal, and the quest will end. ---------------- Huntin' Du'Cate [WDUCATE] ---------------- Requirements: Place AF Medallion on the map AF Earned: Sand Rose Second AF: Ancient Tablet Visit the jungle to start this annoying quest. After the opening scene, go to the upper left exit, and (if you want) go back to the previous screen and talk to Sotherbee. By doing this, you can get a guide for the jungle, the Lilipea that Sotherbee was chasing. Regardless, from the area to the upper left of the entrance to the jungle, head up, right, up, and down. You want to find both Skippie and Hamson, hence the looping bit. Once both of them have been located, follow Hamson to the Forested Ruins. There's a save point here, so feel free to use it. Go upwards, and talk to Rosiotti, the beast. He'll ask you to help Skippie and Hamson hunt Du'Cate. I thought that was the whole point of this quest! Anyway, go back through the Forested Ruins to the area before them (don't take the lower left exit at the ruins; that'll take you back to the entrance of the jungle). Find Skippie and Hamson (they're easy to find this time), and agree to help them (but don't mention either to the other one). Once both agree to help you, head back towards the Forested Ruins. Follow them down the side path, and make your way to Du'cate's spring. Du'Cate is a pretty easy boss; he's basically Du'Inke, but without a club, and climbing trees. The usual cautions are present (attack like mad, hide behind him and at a distance when he starts to flicker, etc.). Once Du'Cate is down, the adventure will conclude. When given the option, just give Hamson and Skippie the paltry money that Sotherbee offers you. The quest's conclusion will get you your AF(s)/metal, as well. --------------------- The Murmuring Forest [WMURMUR] --------------------- Requirements: Complete Huntin' Du'Cate Re-enter the Jungle, and teleport to Rosiotti's throne via the Flowerling near the entrance (ask to go to the Forested Ruins). Talk to the penguin at the throne, then head down and to the right to get teleported back to the entrance of the jungle. Talk to the Flowerling here again, and have him take you to the Courtyard of Rain. Fight the monsters here, and talk to the penguin that shows up. Head right twice, and talk to the Flowerling to get back to the Forested Ruins. Visit the throne, and talk to Selkie. Say yes to both of her questions. The quest officially opens at this point. Go back down to the ruins, and go right. Instead of getting teleported to the entrance, a cutscene will ensue, and afterwards, you should head further right. Just keep going until you reach the Punkster look-alike at the end. Talk to him, and fight him. The Punkmaster is basically just a powered-up Punkster, so he shouldn't be too difficult to defeat. After the battle, you'll see a bit more dialogue, and the quest will end. --------------- The Gorgon Eye [WGORGON] --------------- Requirements: Place AF Stone Eye on the map AF Earned: Firefly Lamp Second AF: Medallion Upon entering Lake Kilma, you'll see the chapter start. Run up to the penguins, and answer any way you like. Then, follow them! The path through the lake is pretty simple: follow the stone statues. If you get lost, just backtrack to the last spot that has stoned penguins. About halfway through, you'll meet the penguins and walrus again, and a bit later, you'll run into a turtle. Just keep following the path (there's treasure along the way, be sure to nab any that you want), and you should reach the cliffside in short order. Just run up to the edge, and watch the amusing story scene. Now you have to fight the Gorgon Eye, though! The eye's a real push-over, despite his size. Hit him constantly to keep him from attacking you, and when he disappears and re-appears, keep away from him and his direct line of sight so he doesn't hit you with his eye beam. After the eye's down, you'll get your reward, and the quest will end. --------------------- In Search of Faeries (Seeking Faeries) [WFAERIES] --------------------- Requirements: Complete Two Torches and Gorgon Eye ------------------ Teatime of Danger (Teatime) [WTEATIME] ------------------ Requirements: Place AF Stone Tablet on the map AF Earned: Bottled Spirit, Rusty Anchor A brief note: there are gates in the Mindas ruins that change when you talk to Flowerlings in other sections of the ruins. The Flowerlings are positioned as the gates stand, so by talking to them and making them move, you can change which gates are open and which are closed. Enter the Mindas Ruins to begin this quest. Talk to Duelle near the entrance to find out that Teapo went into the ruins and hasn't come back yet. Make your way to the Telekenesis Flowerling (as marked in the map section), and then to the Megalithic Structure. Talk to the Flowerling there to open the path down into the Megalithic Structure itself. At the end, Teapo and Count Dovula are waiting. Dovula isn't all that tough; standard boss tactics apply. After the battle, you'll get your AF(s)/metal, and the quest will conclude. -------------------- Star-Crossed Lovers (Star-Crossed) [WLOVERS] -------------------- Requirements: Complete Teatime and Dream Teller ----------------------- Mine Your Own Business (Mining Business) [WMINE] ----------------------- Requirements: Place AF Bottled Spirit on the map AF Earned: Moon's Mirror Second AF: Torch of Coral ---------------------- Pokiehl: Dream Teller [WDREAM] ---------------------- Requirements: Complete Seeking Faeries and Mining Business ------------------- Diddle Kidnapped!? [WKIDNAP] ------------------- Requirements: Complete Diddle Had It!, Catchin' Lilipeas, and Mining Business Visit the Domina church and talk to Roger. Then head to the Mana Angel Park in town and watch as the story opens. After that, head to the White Forest. Your goal here is to reach Diddle, which is pretty easy. Just follow the left paths, bonking any Dudbear you meet on the head. Once you get far enough, you will find Diddle and have to fight a boss. The boss is a Chimera Beast palette-swap, Chimera Lord. He's easy, just like a regular Chimera Beast is. Victory nets you zip, but the quest is over at least. -------------- Heaven's Gate [WHEAVEN] -------------- Requirements: Complete Star-Crossed Special AF: Brooch of Love To start this quest, go visit Gato Grottoes, and enter the Dreamweaving Room of the temple. Talk to Matilda to get the Brooch of Love, and (if you chose to side with Daena earlier, and want to be able to use her later), have Daena join you. (NOTE: If you sided with Escad, he'll be in the jungle; the same applies here about using him later that applies to Daena) Place the AF Brooch of Love on the map, and head there (via Cancun Bird, of course). Location: Lucemia Items: Rotten Meat, Zombie Claw, Creepy Eye, Dragon Blood, Raven Feather, Ghost's Howl, Messy Scroll, Giant's Horn Once on the dead husk, head on into it. There are many enemies in this dead wyrm, but nothing too difficult. At the first fork, take the upper path first (to get a Zombie Claw), then take the lower path. Keep going, and you'll be back on the outside of Lucemia again before long. Tell Selva that you can "Of course!" to continue, or tell him that you can't if you want to leave. Keep following the path, and enter the underside of Lucemia again. At the next fork, take the lower path first to get a Raven Feather, and then take the upper path. Ignore the first exit you see, it's a fake. Just keep going until you find the next exit. Outside, tell Selva "Of course!" again, and keep going. One more trip inside Lucemia later, you'll be along the final stretch of this oversized serpent. Soon, you'll reach the head. Go and walk up to Irwin and talk to him to finish this. Irwin is perhaps the most difficult boss in the game, which really isn't saying much, is it? He has one very hard-to-dodge attack (you'll know he's going to do it, since you see his child form flash inside of him before he does it). The best way to try and avoid it is to walk to a lower edge of the screen, wait until Irwin stops, and start walking towards the other edge. This works about 60% of the time, and usually works best when no allies are left alive. Irwin's other attacks are all standard fare, and most can easily be dodged by simply keeping your distance from him. You get no experience or Lucre for beating Irwin, which is kinda stupid. After the battle, the storyline will conclude. Sit back and enjoy. -------------- Daddy's Broom [WBROOM] -------------- Requirements: Complete Infernal Doll, Li'l Cactus must not be in progress; Crimson Dragon, Heaven's Gate, and Teardrop Stone must not be completed ------------------ The Infernal Doll [WDOLL] ------------------ Requirements: Place AF Broken Doll on the map AF Earned: Tome of Magic Second AF: Moon's Mirror --------------- Diddle Had It! [WHADIT] --------------- Requirements: Complete Diddle's Letter and Fallen Emperor, place AF Firefly Lamp on the map ------------------------ The Looking-Glass Tower (Glass Tower) [WTOWER] ------------------------ Requirements: Place AF Moon's Mirror on the map AF Earned: Frozen Heart Second AF: Pirate's Hook ----------- Two Pearls [WPEARLS] ----------- Requirements: Complete Cosmo You should have no trouble finding this one, assuming you've been keeping up with the Cactus Diary. To start it, talk to Elazul (he's lying on your bed at home) and leave the room each time he responds with "...". Be sure you tell him the truth about Pearl. After three little chats, he'll vanish, and you can start the quest by going to the Tower of Lieres. As before, you just need to get to the top floor and the Room of Truth, talk to Blackpearl and Pearl, then leave the room. You will have to fight Blackpearl now. She's surprisingly easy. The quest will end when you win. ------------------ The Flame of Hope [WHOPE] ------------------ Requirements: Place AF Flame on the map AF Earned: Ancient Tablet Second AF: Torch of Coral Walk up to the nun blocking the path and talk to her to start the quest. Go up the cliff, and talk to the man standing there, a guy called Reubens. Ask after the Sproutling, then continue upwards to the terrace. Talk to the Sproutling, then head for the Temple of Healing and talk to him again. Leave the temple, and go back to the terrace. Tiring, isn't it? Anyway, after you visit the nun and Reubens there, go back to the Temple, and talk to the fallen nun. Once again, visit the terrace, and watch the scene. Talk to Reubens, and when you're prompted, agree to help the inspector. Go to the outskirts of town, and to the dungeon on the far left. These are the Pathways of Asceticism. The path you need to take is clearly outlined by a trail of leaves, so I won't provide a detailed guide here. At the end, some more stuff happens, you'll get your AF(s)/metal, and the quest ends. ------ Cosmo [WCOSMO] ------ Requirements: Complete Lucky Clover, place AF Jade Egg on the map Now the Jumi arc really starts to take off. Talk to Elazul and tell him Pearl isn't there, agree to go with him, and go to the world map. Then head for Mekiv Caverns. The NPC's along the right path will tell you where to go, so this is an easy quest. Once you reach the end, you'll have to fight another Jewel Beast, as easy as the last one was. Talk to the strange little hunchback or Elazul to finish the quest. ---------------- Can't Look Back [WLOOKBACK] ---------------- Requirements: Place AF Frozen Heart on the map AF Earned: Rusty Anchor Second AF: Broken Doll --------------- A Siren's Song [WSIREN] --------------- Requirements: Complete Faeries' Light, Drowned Dreams, and Summer Lovin' Visit Lumina's backstreet area to start this quest. If you don't know where that is, go to the tavern, head left towards El Hazardous, then make a turn to the upper left. Anyway, talk to the soldiers, visit the lamp shop and talk to the soldier there, then leave town. Head for Polpota. Go below the hotel, and talk to Monique. Now, go to Polpota's beach, where a few soldiers are babbling about their supposed fail-safe plan to keep whatever siren they caught locked up. Visit Madora Beach now, and take the left path all the way to the Birdcage Lighthouse. After some dialogue, hide just behind the rocks that make up the bluff of the lighthouse, and once Flameshe has vanished (you need to wait until her bubble is really tiny), go run up and enter. You'll have to fight Tropicallo, but he's just another version of Labanne (the boss of the Ulkan Mines). After you defeat Tropicallo, a short scene will take place, and the quest will end. -------------- Summer Lovin' [WSUMMER] -------------- Requirements: Place AF Torch of Coral on the map AF Earned: Rusty Anchor Second AF: Moon's Mirror This is a very straightforward quest. Enter Madora Beach, and make your way across the rightmost path. Just keep going, and once you reach the Queen Beach, head back to the previous area and downwards to battle Fullmetal Haggar (who should be called Fullmetal Hugger). Though large, this crab is easy to kill. Just keep hitting him until one of his eyes disappears, then resume attacking until the other one is gone, and so forth. As long as you keep hitting him, he shouldn't get a chance to do more than one or two of his special techniques. After the battle, the quest will conclude, and you'll be given your AF(s)/metal. --------------- Drowned Dreams [WDROWNED] --------------- Requirements: Place AF Rusty Anchor on the map AF Earned: Pirate's Hook Second AF: Bottled Spirit Visit the Flowerling in the shopping district, and talk to him; answer however you like, then talk to Flameshe. Go up to the cape, and talk to Thoma there. Then, go to the hotel and talk to Mr. Motti (the one who doesn't act as a save point). Agree to help him, then leave the hotel entirely and re-enter. Answer Basket Fish however you like, then go into the lounge and talk to him until he starts repeating himself. Go down to the docks area, and ask Inspector Boyd all three questions. Ask him about himself, and then say that the imperial sodier has blue eyes. Visit the restaurant at the base of the hotel (it looks like a clamshell on the city map), then go back up to the entrance of the hotel. Go into the hall that Basket Fish rented out, and talk to Thoma. The quest will conclude itself, and Mr. Motti will give you your AF(s)/metal. --------- Fluorite [WFLUORITE] --------- Requirements: Complete Alexandrite and Reach for Stars, Wimpy Thugling must not be in progress The penultimate Jumi quest, this one. Be sure you finish Wimpy Thugling first if you plan to do that one. Anyway, to start it, visit the jewelery shop in Geo. Agree to help Florina out, and then make your way through the dream desert (use Niccolo whenever you find him if you don't want to explore). Once you've seen the scene with Blackpearl and Elazul, talk to Elazul and head past the cleared sandfall for another area of the desert (don't use Niccolo any longer, he'll just take you back to the oasis if you do). Keep going to see another Blackpearl/Elazul scene. Again, go past the cleared sandfall. Follow the path, and fight another Jewel Beast (easy as usual). This will end the quest. --------------- Faeries' Light [WLIGHT] --------------- Requirements: Place AF Firefly Lamp on the map AF Earned: Trembling Spoon Second AF: Sand Rose Head into Lumina, and take the right path. Keep going right and up, and you should soon reach a lamp shop. Talk to the owner to officially start the quest. Now, go outside and talk to the centaur, Gilbert. Agree to sell the lamps, then hightail it to the main city map. From there, take the left path, and go and talk to the puzzle-piece-looking bartender. Ask him to teach you the Dudbear language (respond to his last question however you want). The first Dudbear to sell to is the one right next to the barkeep. Tell him dud, dub, and dub, then try selling the lamp. The next one is below, walking around the table area. Tell him dub 3 times, then sell a lamp to him. The last one is in Bright Moon Alley, walking around near a Sproutling. Tell him dud 3 times, then dub, and sell the lamp. Take them all back to Gilbert, then follow him into Monique's shop. Go back outside and talk to either Gilbert or Monique, then return to Monique's shop and talk to her to get your reward for the quest. ----------------- The Lucky Clover [WCLOVER] ----------------- Requirements: Complete Glass Tower, place AF Tome of Magic on the map, complete Flame of Hope and Drowned Dreams, don't have any open quests in or relating to Geo (potential quests are okay) AF Earned: Jade Egg Second AF: Frozen Heart To start this quest, go to Domina and recruit Elazul from the bar. Then head for Geo and talk to the green-haired girl at the academy. Now you'll have to do some time-shifting to catch her on the days she can talk to you, so use Carl's Cafe wisely to skip ahead days. For best results, try to arrive in Geo on Aura Day. You first need to catch her on a day besides Undine or Gnome Day, then talk to her the next day. Visit her again at the library on Undine or Gnome Day. After this, you'll need to go hunt down the other three cores. They're located at the academy, athe Palace of Arts in the basement, and the Cafe. You must get the Cafe one last, and you must get the one at the Academy on Dryad Day, so this could take a while. Getting the Cafe one to show up requires you to leave without staying after talking to the manager of the Cafe and the jewelery shop. Then visit the Geo city map, and back to the Cafe. Once you have all three, Sandra will make her appearance. Go grab Elazul from the jewelery shop, and visit the academy to discover that Esmeralda has been kidnapped. Then head for the Palace of Arts basement. Talk to Diana, then get ready to fight a Jewel Beast. It's pretty easy, as most LoM bosses are. Afterwards, the quest will conclude. ------------ Alexandrite [WALEX] ------------ Requirements: Complete Two Pearls; have no open quests in Geo Strangely, this quest has more to do with diamond than alexandrite... Anyway, start by visiting Elazul in Domina, and agree to take Pearl. Then head to the Palace of Arts basement and check Diana. Talk to Kristie, and check the weapon shop and the principal's office and grab to keys there. The third and last key is at the city gates. Go back to Diana again (she's in the arena now) and check her to finish this short quest. ----------------- Teardrop Crystal (Teardrop Stone) [WTEARDROP] ----------------- Requirements: Complete Fluorite Special AF: Jumi Staff Head to Domina, and talk to Inspector Boyd near the church. (NOTE: If he's not there, you didn't go back to Home after Fluorite; do so and then come back). Tell him that it can't be so, and then agree to come with him to Geo. Answer his next question however you want, and then enter Alex's shop. The place is a mess, huh? Try to leave, and you'll run into the lovable couple, Elazul and Pearl! Go ahead and check Pandora's Box (the big box in the lower right corner of the shop), and then watch as the story unfolds. Once you've been given control again, talk to either Elazul or Pearl, and choose your partner for this event. I suggest Pearl, actually; she has the ability to turn into Lady Blackpearl for boss battles, and Lady Blackpearl has the best Synchro effect for boss fights, hands down. If you do choose Pearl, talk to Elazul to get the SwordOfFate, a fairly good IshePlatinum 1HSword. Then, it's off to the world map again! Put down the Jumi Staff, and enter the Bejeweled City. Location: Etansel, City of Shimmering Ruin Items: Holy Water, Magical Meat, Messy Scroll, Mirror Piece, Virgin's Sigh, Angel Feather, White Feather If you took Pearl, you can find out a bit more about the past of this city. Anyway, your goal here is really simple: you need to collect the right gems to open Sappho's Gate, and there are four gemstone rooms on the first level. Get all of the gems (just for safety), and then go check the gate. Now you'll have to fight Jewel Beast type 1. He's quite easy, so no worries. Place the gems until the door opens (it's random every game, you'll just have to listen to the sounds the door makes to know if you've got it right). I've noticed that (rather appropriately) gates almost always require a Sapphire, no matter what the other gemstones are. Head up to the second level. The second level isn't a whole lot different than the first, other than the presence of only two gemstone rooms, and an extra area where more ancient history will be shown to you. Again, check Sappho's Gate to fight a Jewel Beast, this one type 2. After the fight, place gemstones on the pedestals to open the gate. Note that you might need some of the gemstones you used for the first gate; in that case, just go back down to the correct gemstone rooms and get a new one. The third level has only one gemstone room, and another plot area. The Sappho's Gate here has a Jewel Beast type 4 for you to fight, and requires four gems to unlock. Same deal as before, nab any gems you might need that were used for the previous gate, open the gate, head up. In the room of the Clarius, more events unfold, and you'll have to fight the Lord of Jewels 999. He's not tough at all, just smack him repeatedly, and get away from him when he starts flickering. After the fight, you'll have to fight him again, this time in his ultimate form, Lord of Jewels 1000. He's still not very hard, though. Just take him down with regular attacks and STs as you see fit, and (of course) keep away from him when he does his STs. After the fights, the Jumi arc will come to a very moving end. I won't spoil anything here, though; it's worth seeing for yourself. -------------- The Quiet Sea [WQUIETSEA] -------------- Requirements: Place AF Pirate's Hook on the map AF Earned: Medallion Second AF: Frozen Heart Head on into the wheelhouse, and talk to Ramtieger. Have him go south, east, and east. The wind stops, so you're stuck for now. Go on up to the forecastle deck, and talk to the penguin there. Go down, and right back up. Talk to the penguin again, and watch him unleash a ghost on the ship! Stupid, stupid penguin... Anyway, go down to the bridge, and talk to the captain. Now, go belowdecks and look for the moving barrel. Talk to it, and say that you're a pretty girl. Talk to it again, and then go above-deck. Now, you'll have to fight Gova. Gova is just a palette-swap of Spriggan, and with less moves, to boot. I doubt you'll have much trouble with her. Victory will net you a crab for your library, and some AF(s)/metal, as well. ----------------- The Treasure Map [WTREASURE] ----------------- Requirements: Place AF Jade Egg and AF Pirate's Hook on the map Head for the wheelhouse, and have Ramtieger go north, north, and east. Now, you need to find the map! It shouldn't be too tough. Once you find it, though, the Dudbears shred it into 8 pieces, and each runs off with a piece. Try to locate them all, and bonk them on the heads to get the pieces back. You can only hit them when they're moving, not when they're stopped. Note that you have to do this fairly quickly, or Roger will show up and thwart the nearest penguin (bloody cowards), and the quest is a bust. But, if you just leave the scene and re-enter, Roger's entrance timer resets, but you keep any map pieces that you've nabbed so far. Good deal, huh? Just search the caverns thoroughly, and you'll find all of those silly Dudbears, no problem. Completion of this quest will net you a crab for your library. -------------------- Reach for the Stars [WREACH] -------------------- Requirements: Place AF Sand Rose on the map AF Earned: Torch of Coral Second AF: Broken Doll -------------------- The Dragon Princess [WDRAGON] -------------------- Requirements: Complete Bone Dragon, place AF Green Cane on the map, have Larc in the party AF Earned: Torch of Coral ---------------------- The Guardian of Winds [WGUARDIAN] ---------------------- Requirements: Complete Fallen Emperor, place AF Skull Lantern on the map, have Larc in the party AF Earned: Dragonbone Second AF: Tome of Magic Enter Norn Peaks, and the quest will start (after a bit of cutscene). Make your way to the village of the Windcallers, and talk to the Windcallers that are blocking the path up. After this, go up the mountain. Your main goal up here is to defeat all three Windcallers. See the maps section for where they all are. Once all 3 are defeated, check the statue, and continue up the mountain. Before long, you'll reach Akravator, the boss of this mountain. He likes to use special attacks that are very hard to dodge, so keep him occupied with quick attacks. Once Akravator is down, the quest will conclude, and you'll receive your AF(s). --------------------- The Ghost of Nemesis (Bone Dragon) [WGHOST] --------------------- Requirements: Complete Field Trip, have Larc and a pet in the party AF Earned: Green Cane ------------------- The Crimson Dragon [WCRIMSON] ------------------- Requirements: Complete Dragon Princess To start this quest, head for the Underworld. Check the tombstone, and agree to help Sierra. Check the tombstone, and the game takes over for a bit as this chapter is formally opened. Your goal here is simple: get to the bottom of the Underworld. The path is not difficult, just check any and every room you find until you find a path down. Once you reach the fourth level, you'll see a large group of Shadoles. Run into one to automatically be taken to the lowest level. Convenient! Enter the doorway, and watch Drakonis' treachery unveil. Now you have to fight Larc, unfortunately. He's not really all that incredibly difficult, but it's sad all the same that Sierra has to kill her own brother. As with all bosses, just keep your distance from him when he prepares to do his own STs, and pound him with your STs. After the fight, Drakonis' castle will rise again, and you'll be right outside it. Once you can, talk to Sierra, and say that you're ready to both her and Vadise to enter the Flames. Location: The Flames Items: Dragon Blood, Raven Feather, Wicked Eye, Dragon Steak, Flaming Quill, Creepy Eye, Stinky Breath, Dragon Breath This has to be, without a doubt, the most annoying dungeon in history. The floors like to open up below you a lot in various hallways, and there's often no logical reason as to why they do this (it's supposed to be because of the glowing gemstones on the six pedestals on either side of any given hallway, but there's no fixed pattern to what combinations of lighted and unlighted gemstones will drop you down!). Upon entering the Flames, just keep going until you reach the second floor, and take the left path. Follow it up, and enter the doorway. Go ahead and try to cross; it'll take you to an otherwise inaccessible area of the third floor, which sports a sprite statue for saving your game. From here, you'll want to take the far left staircase first. Follow it to its end, and defeat the Sky Dragon at the end to deactivate all green gemstones in the hallways. Go ahead and grab the treasure chest down the hall on the other side of the Sky Dragon's room, and make your way back to the third floor sprite statue. This time, take the left middle path, and fall down the pit past the two dragons. Now you'll have to fight Zenoa, Larc's doppleganger. He has exactly the same moves as Larc did, so he won't prove too difficult at all. After he's down, the blue gemstones are deactivated. Just one color left to deactivate! Return to the second floor, and take the right-hand path from the large doors. Follow the route down into the second basement, and kill the Land Dragon down there. That removes all of the gemstones you can remove! Grab any treasures you might have missed, and then go straight up to the third floor's big door, and up to the fourth floor via the now-safe pathway. It's time to turn one crimson dragon inside out! Drakonis is second-easiest of the story arc bosses. He has a multi-explosion attack similar to Irwin's, but it's a lot easier to dodge. He also has a consuming attack, but as long as you keep your distance, that's not a big deal. He jumps around a lot, but rarely uses his special attacks, so just focus on attacking regularly until he uses a special move, then use an ST on him, then keep hitting him. He'll die in no time. After Drakonis is down, the plot will take over, and this story arc will come to a close. ------------------- The Fallen Emperor [WFALLEN] ------------------- Requirements: Place AF Trembling Spoon on the map AF Earned: Skull Lantern Second AF: Broken Doll Go visit the Underworld, and check the tombstone to start this quest. Make your way downwards to the second layer, and locate Olbohn's control room (it's not difficult; there are all of two areas you can enter on the second level at this point, anyway). Talk to Olbohn a few times, then go visit the Baptismal Chamber and receive the Baptism of Flames. Now you can access lots of stuff, including the path down to the third level. Collect the stuff, head down, and once you reach the Shrine of Silent Faces, you'll have to fight Hidotama. This glowing face monster, though annoying, is not difficult. Keep him in check with lots of quick attacks, and keep away from the line of sight of the faces on the walls when he vanishes. Once Hidotama is defeated, the quest will conclude, and you'll receive your AF(s). ------------------- The Blessed Elixir [WELIXIR] ------------------- Requirements: Complete Nic's Business, Flame of Hope, and Reach for Stars; place AF Firefly Lamp and AF Tome of Magic on the map; must not be doing any Nic's Business quests To start this quest out, go talk to the guy who owns the fruit parlor in Geo. Then, go to the Pathways of Asceticism (what a strange word, that one...), and enter the cave where the blessed elixir is stored. Whoops, looks like Nic's been causing trouble! Now you have to fight him. He's punch drunk, so don't worry; he's not tough. Heck, Escad's harder, and I consider him to be one of the easiest boss enemies in all history. Anyway, go back inside the cave and find out what you need to do. Go back to Geo and talk to the fruit parlor owner. Now, go to Lumina. Talk to the bartender, and say that you know why (even if you don't really). Go to Duma Desert, and find the oasis. It's a bit hidden, but the entrance is right above where you face off two Skull Beasts and a Fierce Face. It's on the same path that you took in Reach for the Stars. Anyway, the quest will finish itself up rather nicely once you've reached the oasis. -------------- Seeing Double [WDOUBLE] -------------- Requirements: Have level 3 Shade essence in Domina Head into Domina, and watch as your doppleganger causes trouble. Mean, mean doppleganger! Go up into the market, and then go back down into the center of Domina. Enter the shop, and watch as Duelle (or is it?) forces Teapo to hand over a bunch of pumpkins. Why would anybody hoarde pumpkins? Anyway, head back outside, and follow the doppleganger to the west end of Domina. Now you have to face off Shadow Zero-One. S0-1 is pretty easy. He's basically just a Shadow Zero with more HP and slightly higher attack power. Beat him into oblivion to end the quest. ------------------- The Cage of Dreams [WCAGE] ------------------- Requirements: Complete Crimson Dragon, Teardrop Stone, or Heaven's Gate; at least 20 AF's placed AF Earned: Sword of Mana A simple quest. Go inside your house after completing one of the above quests, tell the cactus about it (if you're recording Cactus Diaries, that is), and leave Home entirely. Re-enter to start the event. Go inside your house, then exit it. Follow the trail of leaves to your workshops and enter. Talk to Nunuzac and Belle, then leave. Say yes to Pokiehl, and then talk to Nunuzac. Welcome to the Cage of Dreams! Looks a lot like the Mekiv Caverns, huh? Anyway, it's a straight shot to the Sproutling, and the enemies are nothing you haven't dealt with before. Once you reach the final room, the quest will end, and you'll have the Sword of Mana. Too bad you can't equip it, huh? ----------------------------------- Niccolo's Business Unusual: Part 2 (Nic's Business 2) [WNICCOLO2] ----------------------------------- Requirements: Complete Nic's Business and Flame of Hope AF Earned: Broken Doll Second AF: Medallion This quest is easy. Go to Gato, and talk to Niccolo (he's in the weapon shop). Agree to help him, then go straight to the waterfall (you can bypass the dungeon, since you've already been through it). At the waterfall, head to the right (leaving Niccolo at the falls), then back left and talk to him once. Now, just wait for a fairy to show up on the bridge across the waterfall, and talk to her. Answer however you like, and answer Niccolo's question however you like. He'll give you a Greenball Bun, 500 Lucre, and your AF(s)/metal. ----------------------------------- Niccolo's Business Unusual: Part 3 (Nic's Business 3) [WNICCOLO3] ----------------------------------- Requirements: Complete Nic's Business 2 and Teatime, place AF Firefly Lamp on the map Head to Lumina, and talk to Niccolo (he's in the jewel shop). Agree to go with him, and then go to the Mindas Ruins. Find the Telekenesis Flowerling, and then make your way back to the entrance. This can take a bit, but it's quite possible. Once at the entrance, Nic will ditch you, and the quest will end. ----------------------------------- Niccolo's Business Unusual: Part 4 (Nic's Business 4) [WNICCOLO4] ----------------------------------- Requirements: Complete Nic's Business 3 and Mining Business; place AF Tome of Magic on the map Visit the outdoor fruit parlor in Geo, and talk with Niccolo. Agree to take him along, and visit the Ulkan Mines. Visit Watts' shop, then re-enter it. If you have a Gator Skin, just go in one more time. If you don't have one, then go to Domina and by one from Ms. Yuka for 100 Lucre. Once you give Watts his Gator Skin, re-enter his shop and the quest will end. ------------------------ Niccolo Calls It Quits? (Final Business?) [WNICCOLO5] ------------------------ Requirements: Complete Nic's Business 4, place AF Rusty Anchor on the map Visit the bronze auditorium at the Palace of Arts in Geo, and talk to Madame Kristie. After this, go to Polpota Harbor's beach, and talk to Niccolo. Take him to see Kristie, then go to Gato and get another leaf. Take it to Kristie and return once more to the Cancun's nest for the last leaf. Return once more to Polpota, and re-recruit Niccolo. Go back to Geo and give Kristie the last leaf, and the quest ends. ------------ Li'l Cactus [WCACTUS] ------------ Requirements: Nic's Business and Huntin' Du'cate completed; place AF Tome of Magic on the map; Daddy's Broom must not be in progress (note that, although the Pirate's Hook is required to complete this quest, you don't have to put it down to start the quest) This quest is a bit annoying... Anyway, to start it, talk to Bud (he should be lying down on the floor). Talk to Lisa, and then go to Domina and have your fortune told. Go back home, and recruit Lisa. Now, go upstairs and check the cactus pot. Go to Luon Highway and visit Gaeus. Now, go to the jungle and talk to Selkie (she may not be at Rosiotti's throne; if so, go to the Greenwood Gardens, fight the enemies there, and then go to Rosiotti's throne and talk to her). Now, go to see Brownie in Geo (he's the kid standing outside of the classroom), and go see David on the S.S. Bucaneer (on the lower decks; just talk to every pirate penguin, you'll find him). Now, go back to Domina and talk to Amalette, the pelican. Go back home, and there's Li'l Cactus! That ends this quest. ------- Rachel [WRACHEL] ------- Requirements: Complete School Amour To start this quest, go to Domina and talk to all of the characters in Rachel's family (Mark, Sasha, Rachel, and Teapo). This will take two visits, since the two parents switch duty on watching the shop. Anyway, once you've talked to everybody, go back into town, and go upstairs. If Rachel is gone, then the quest is ready to get moving. If she's not gone, go to Geo and talk to Thenesis in the library, and then go back to Domina. Talk to everybody, and be sure that you talk to Mark up in Rachel's room. Once the quest title's faded out, head to Geo and check the library on Salamander Day. Then, go back to Domina and talk to everybody again. Things are a bit odd now, hmm? Leave Domina and re-enter. If Duelle's running the shop, then go upstairs and watch the last few scenes of this adventure. If he's not, then you didn't talk to everybody yet. --------------------- The Nordic Snowfield (Nordic Field) [WNORDIC] --------------------- Requirements: Complete Can't Look Back, place AF Pirate's Hook on the map Go onto the S.S. Buccaneer, and have Ramtieger take you south, south, and west. At the snowfields, the penguins chicken out (too cold for penguins? Um, don't penguins normally live in very cold environments?), and you're left to find the faeries' treasure on your own. The faeries are located as follows: Area 1 Takis - Level 3 (N/A) (no name) - Level 5 (N/A) Elrahg - Level 7 (Draupnir) Area 2 (Save Point) Fiornetta - Level 1 (Level 2) Pietta - Level 3 (Level 1) Silvanella - Level 5 (N/A) Area 3 Malbaresta - Level 2 (Level 3) Elkin - Level 4 (Level 2) Tilda - Level 5 (Level 6) Area 4 Elnata - Level 2 (level 4) Lucini - Level 3 (level 5) Luk'anita - Level 6 (level 2) Area 5 Quinn - Level 4 (Level 3) Alcione - Level 5 (N/A) Lakshmi - Level 6 (Level 7) Your goal, of course, is to find Elrahg. The Levels listed in brackets are the levels that the faeries will set your faerie eye level to if you talk to them. The first level listing is (of course) the minimum faerie eye level you need to see that particular faerie. If, when you reach faerie level 7, you fail to locate Elrahg, just go back and have Lakshmi cast her spell on you again, and make another guess. Once you guess correctly, Elrahg will give you Draupnir as your reward, you'll get another crab for your library, and the quest will officially end. ---------------- Buried Treasure [WBURIED] ---------------- Requirements: Complete Treasure Map and Summer Lovin' AF Earned: Firefly Lamp Second AF: Stone Eye Jump on the S.S. Bucaneer and talk to the helmsman, Ramtieger. Have him go west, west, and north. This will take you to Madora Beach (it still amazes me that the ship can teleport around like that... :P). The captain will take you and the penguins ashore, and give you 15 Halo Coins to bribe Dudbears with. You won't be using more than 5 of them, so don't worry; you've got plenty. In the first area, talk to the middle Dudbear, and give him a Halo Coin. Then, go straight on forward. In the first cave, you'll find a whole bunch of those weird doll-like things walking about. The one closest to where you entered from will give you a Li'l Bottle for a Halo Coin. Trade 3 times with him, so you have 3 Li'l Bottles. Go up to the exit that's blocked, and give the Dudbear blocking your path a Li'l Bottle. Follow the paths, and in the next blockaded room, the second Dudbear over from where you enter will trade you Pucashells for Li'l Bottles. Give him both of your bottles, and give the guard of the exit a Pucashell. Keep going, and give your last Pucashell to the last guard in the next cave full of Dudbears. Out on the beach, check the treasure chest, and give the Dudbears a Halo Coin. This completes the quest! You'll get a crab for your library, and the AF(s)/metal reward, as well. ----------------------- Path of the Blacksmith (Blacksmithing) [WSMITHY] ----------------------- Requirements: Complete Watts's Hammer Head into your workshops to start the event. Watts will walk outside, and inform you that he's built you a forge. Now you'll have to ask every question you can to get the game to continue. After Watts figures you've got it down, he gives you some MenosBronze, starts to walk off, and forgets that he gave you anything. You can lie to him if you want another piece of MenosBronze, but why would you? Anyway, this ends the quest. ---------------- Instruments 101 [WMUSIC] ---------------- Requirements: Complete Reach for Stars Head into your workshops to start the event. A student from Geo will come out of them, telling you that he's (rather conveniently) built you a workshop for building instruments. How sweet. Now, you'll have to catch an elemental spirit. The kid gives you an instrument, fortunately. Just pick any song; for now, the spirits like everything. When they get close enough, stop the song and go talk to the closest one to get some Wisp Silver. Now the tutorial on making instruments will continue, and you'll trade 2 of your Wisp Silver for 1 Sala Silver and 1 Aura Siler, as well as getting some (very worthless) MenosBronze. Thus ends this quest. ------------------ Golem Go Make 'em (Golem Workshop) [WGOLEM] ------------------ Requirements: Complete Prof. Bomb's Lab Head into your workshops to start the event. The quiz given is actually really easy, seeing as most of the wrong answers are obviously wrong. If you find a tough question, just give an answer, and if it's wrong, give the other answer that would make sense. If you're planning on making golems, though, you just might want to read that Golem Encyclopedia. Anyway, once you answer the quiz all correctly, you'll get MenosBronze and ForsenaIron (cheap bastard, that Bomb), and the quest will be over. ------------------ The Mana Orchards [WORCHARD] ------------------ Requirements: Visit Gaeus on the Luon Highway Go into the empty field in the southwest corner of your home, and kill the four Lullabuds there. Trent will be awakened. Go ahead and plant some seeds in him, and then leave. Go wander about for a few days, and when at least one produce is ripened, pick it. Trent will make a comment about picking produce, and the quest will end. --------------- Monster Corral [WMONSTER] --------------- Requirements: Complete Tiny Sorcerers Go to the west end of Domina, and you should see Duelle there. Go ahead and ask him about catching monsters if you want, or just cut to the chase. If you have an FF8 save on your memory card, the monster egg here will be an aerial egg; otherwise, it's a beast egg. Anyway, catching it is easy. Drop some meats on the ground in a circle around it, then walk away from it so it can't "see" you. Once it finishes chowing down, go talk to it to catch it. Pick up all of your stray meat and then go talk to Duelle. Some more tutorial on how to take care of pets later, the quest will end. ---------------------- Gilbert: School Amour [WGILBERT2] ---------------------- Requirements: Place AF Tome of Magic on the map; must not be doing Siren's Song, Faeries' Light, or Love is Blind This quest is really easy to start and finish. Head to Geo's fruit parlor, and watch as Gilbert tries to woo Kathinja. Stupid, stupid Gilbert... Go talk to him, and then start convincing the kids to go back to school. It's not that hard; if the choice you make doesn't work the first time, pick the other choice. Also, be sure you talk to both of the kids in the Sorry Carl! cafe, or the quest will never end. Once it's all over, Gilbert gets petrified (rather predictably) by Kathinja. ------------------------- Gilbert: Resume for Love [WGILBERT3] ------------------------- Requirements: Complete School Amour To start this quest, go check out Gilbert's statue in the basement of the bronze auditorium (in Geo). Leave Geo, and visit the Ulkan Mines. Visit the Diggers' base, and summon Roger via his poetry. After the Dudbears kick you out of the mines, go back in and to their lair. Call Roger again, and he'll tell you that he bought a "horse statue" to support the mines. Go upstairs, and find Gilbert (he's in one of the abandoned rooms). Now, go visit Monique in Lumina after this, then go to Madora Beach and the Birdcage Lighthouse. There, Flameshe will try to teach Monique a spell. The spell (as you'll need to know it shortly), is thus: "Heavens bless the earth with life-giving showers of rain. The ancient memories of Mother Earth fill our souls with bliss. Know the truth that is the ultimate tower of energy for all." Go to the Ulkan Mines, back to Gilbert's room. Repeat the lines from above that Monique forgets. If you do it right, then Gilbert will be returned to normal, and the quest will end. Pick all the wrong answers for an amusing event, but be sure to save before you do. --------------------- Professor Bomb's Lab [WBOMBSLAB] --------------------- Requirements: Complete Gorgon's Eye, place AF Broken Doll on the map Go talk to Professor Bomb in his lab, on the north end of the Junkyard. I suggest you wait until you've completed The Infernal Doll before doing this quest, so you can teleport there via Flowerling. Anyway, he'll tell you about his golem Pavlov, and how it ran away. Leave the Junkyard and go to Lake Kilma. Follow the golem there, and prepare to battle it. Pavlov is a really easy boss, so much so that he's considered a regular monster by the Monster Encyclopedia. Chains of attacks work best against him, as they do against just about every monster in this game. After Pavlov's down, you'll automatically return to the professor, and the quest will end. ----------------------- Watts Drops the Hammer (Watts's Hammer) [WHAMMER] ----------------------- Requirements: Complete Mining Business Easy quest. Go into Watts' shop in the mines, and then go check out the Dudbear Express sign back at the entrance. Grab the hammer from in front of the fireplace, and go back upstairs through the mines to Watts' shop. Give him the hammer to end this quest. ------------------ The Seven Wisdoms [WWISDOMS] ------------------ Requirements: Complete Tiny Sorcerers, talk to Bud This quest has no real fixed order to proceed in. Just find the six Wisdoms and talk to them all while Bud is in the party. Here's where you'll find each one... Tote: Lake Kilma, at the cliff Gaeus: Luon Highway, lower path Rosiotti: Jungle, at his throne Olbohn: Underworld Selva: Gato Grottoes, near the temple path on Jinn Day (late in the game) Pokiehl: Briefly at the Ulkan Mines, Lumina, and Home; stays at the Mana Tree After you talk to all six Wisdoms, just return home to end the quest. Note that you don't have to talk to them all in one go, either. --------------- The Field Trip [WTRIP] --------------- Requirements: Place AF Dragonbone on the map A very simple quest, this one. Talk to any of the kids here, and then talk to the kid sitting in the middle of the village. Now, go up on the hill and talk to the boy standing near the top of the hill (he gives you faerie scales), the green Flowerling male walking around the middle of the area (he should give you star sparkles), and the purple Flowerling female near the bottom of the hill (who gives you silver mushrooms). If you got them all right, you'll complete this quest, and get an Oblong Seed. If you didn't get all 3, just go back to the hill and talk to different characters until you do get the right combo. You can't really fail this quest, after all. ------------------ Catchin' Lilipeas [WLILIPEAS] ------------------ Requirements: Complete Dragon Princess and Huntin' Du'Cate AF Earned: Broken Doll To do this quest, return to the White Forest. Now, you need to locate two Lilipeas trapped in barrels, and you need to talk to both Hamson and Skippie. Once you've done everything, locate the Lilipea Village, where Hamson and Skippie will part ways. Enter the village, and talk to the reverend there. Talk to one Lilipea near the reverend, then walk to the far end of the village (where the Lilipea with the bird on its head is). Once the reverend gets close enough, talk to the bird-wearer, and he'll tell you to fight a boss for him. The boss is a Mantis Ant recolor, called Hegs Ant, and it's easy. After the fight, you'll get your AF/metal, and the quest will end. ----------------------- Gilbert: Love is Blind [WGILBERT1] ----------------------- Requirements: Complete Siren's Song and place AF Pirate's Hook on the map; also, don't have Gilbert: School Amour in progress or completed To start this quest, go get Elle from the Birdcage Lighthouse on Madora Beach (the Boink can teleport you there fast). Take her to Polpota Harbor, and go talk to Gilbert down in the seashell restaurant. Now, go back to the Birdcage Lighthouse, and watch the hilarity ensue. Go up and get Elle, and then go outside to see the next amusing scene. Now, go to the S.S. Bucaneer and talk to both Elle and Gilbert. Go down to the captain's cabin, and then go back on deck. Just watch what happens, and get ready, because you have a boss to fight soon! The Orc is an ugly bugger, but not very hard to defeat. He has a trash-toss attack that hits most of the screen, but that's hardly a big threat if you just keep moving. Once the Orc is down, the story will conclude, and you'll get squat. Oh well. ------------------- The Wimpy Thugling [WTHUGLING] ------------------- Requirements: Complete Reach for Stars and Blessed Elixir, have level 3 Dryad on Duma Desert, level must be 40 or higher, Fluorite must not be completed yet; make sure you go with no pets following you, too Go into the desert, and you'll meet the little Sahaguin at the first fork. Talk to him, and agree to help him. From here, you just have to navigate according to the tremors. This is really easy, so I won't explain it in any sort of detail. Once you reach the end of the trail, you'll have to battle Kima. Now, don't let his overgrown weed appearance fool you; Kima's a mean bastard. He loves to constantly use special attacks, frequently without letting you hit him even once between using them. Fortunately, his special attacks are all very broadcasted and easy to dodge, so this fight will just be annoyingly long, not particularly difficult. After Kima croaks, you'll get a Flat and Spiny Seed. If you want to recruit Tikkle after this quest as a pet, give them to him; otherwise, keep them. If you do want Tikkle, just re-enter the desert after the quest ends and recruit him. --------------- Pee-Wee Birdie [WPEEWEE] --------------- Requirements: Have level 3 Wisp and Salamander on Domina; Pee-Wee must not be shattered This is probably the easiest quest in the entire game, hands down. Go to the inn, and Ms. Yuka will tell you that she needs MenosBronze, BobabWood, Animal Hide, ToppleCotton, Flat Seed, Citrisquid, Rotten Meat, and Sulfur. Now, most of this stuff should be in your inventory, and the bits that might not be can be purchased from the kid selling resources on the second floor of the inn (the door on the right side). Talk to her once you have it all, and you'll complete this quest. If you go back later, you can get a ReviveRing from the newly hatched Pee-Wee by talking to it. --------------- Legend of Mana [WLEGEND] --------------- Requirements: Place AF Sword of Mana on the map Location: Tree of Mana Items: Magical Meat, Healing Claw, Angel Feather, Little Eye, Knockout Dust, Mirror Piece, Ether, Virgin's Sigh The final quest! Head into the Mana Tree, and make your way through the outer branches to the Sanctuary of Mana. The tree can be a bit confusing at first, but it doesn't take long to figure out which path goes where. Once you reach the Sanctuary of Mana, you have to kill all monsters in it to proceed. Be sure to nab all of the items here, as well (they're all rare items that no monster drops). Once the sanctuary is cleared, you'll be taken to the Mana Goddess herself, and have to fight her dark side. The Mana Goddess is not too tough, but she does have some attacks to be wary of. The most important thing to remember is, move away from her when she starts flickering! Also, try to defeat her before the black moon shadow fully descends, or she'll use a very powerful move that's all but impossible to dodge. No real tactic is needed to beat this boss; regular attacks will do just fine. After the battle, the game is over! Watch the ending, and congratulations on winning Legend of Mana! But, you can get even the best weapons and armor purchasable the first time through the game, simply by putting land down in a particular order. ATTAINING AF'S: You get new AF's after many of the quests in Legend of Mana. What AF's you get are pre-determined, but how many you get depends on how many AF's you're holding at the time. If you have 2 or fewer AF's on your AF tray when you finish a quest, assuming you haven't already gotten it, you'll get a second AF from some quests. However, if you've already received the main AF that a quest gives, you won't get any AF at all, even if you have less than 3 AF's on your tray. If you for any reason don't get an AF from an AF-giving quest, you'll get a metal based on the Land score. THE LAND SCORING SYSTEM: There's a "score" that all lands have, based off of two factors: 1.) When they're placed, and 2.) How far away from Home they're placed. This means that Home has a score of 1, no matter what, and Domina has a score of 3, no matter what. Each shop in the game gets better (or worse) items for sale in it depending on how high (or low) its score is. The absolute max score for any land is 36 (which is hard to pull off, trust me). The only land that doesn't seem to follow the rules on Land scores is Duma Desert: the metal reward from its quest is always bumped up in value by 10 Land score points, inexplicably. As well, the history of the world closely matches that of Seiken Densetsu 3's. Methinks this may be a true sequel... Instruments work differently, though. Each town sells a particular type of instrument, unless their land score is 27 or greater, in which case, they sell a fixed instrument selection, made entirely of Ishe Platinum (except the Drum instruments, which are MenosBronze). I may or may not include a list of items sold in these shops later. There's already a very comprehensive guide on this available at GameFAQs, so it seems a bit redundant to list them in my guide, as well. When placing land, they give their essence level out to all adjacent lands placed. The placed lands do this to a lesser extent, as well. Elemental levels are a key factor in determining many things, including the chances of finding elemental spirits and how fast produce grows. You can get some very powerful pets with produce, and even some very valuable forging materials (particularly in the case of Spiny Seeds; those buggers give some very nice bonuses to items, under the right circumstances). ----------------------------- Chart of Produce and Effects ----------------------------- Produce is extremely useful in Legend of Mana. You can raise your pet's stats with it relatively easily, and even give color to golems with them. Below is a comprehensive list of produce, and as many individual facts as I could fit in and still be practical with. Rarity Key: 1 - Common (Have yet NOT to see one show up in a planting of its color) 2 - Fairly Common (Seen most plantings of its color) 3 - Almost Uncommon (You see one or two now and again) 4 - Fairly Uncommon (Almost never seen in a planting) 5 - Uncommon (Tough to get; never appear without Spiny Seeds) 6 - Insanely Uncommon (Only two fall into this category; I've never seen them) NOTES: Most of the useful produce is either insanely hard to get, or fairly easy. Let's begin... THE BASICS: This is how the system works. Planting Seeds - Trent (the tree) can grow up to 8 produce at a time, or four seeds worth. One seed alone can sprout 3 produce (the last one is more useful for encouraging other forms of growth than actually producing anything). Of course, the Orchard tree (which grows from the AF Mana Seed, which you get after about 10 plantings and harvestings) does the same thing. Growing the Produce - Produce grows by a day-by-day basis, so you don't have to go and fight in a dungeon or anything to get it to grow. Instead, just walk around on the world map for a while, and the produce will grow. GROWING SPECIFIC PRODUCE: Some produce colors are a bit tricky to work with. Below is a chart of what each seed type produces, and what mixing seeds will get you, and the priority for each. Note that same-color seed mixing of the three mixed-color seeds (Big, Small, and Long) will result in equal priority for the two sub-colors of the seed (Long Seeds are Blue and Red, for example). Most multi-color mixes have a chance of randomly producing white produce, as well, but it's best to use Flat Seeds to get White produce. It's less common to get white produce from multi-color mixes than even black, which is also usually very uncommon. As a bonus, some combinations with them also give a chance to grow black produce, of which there are two, and one is infuriatingly difficult to get (and potentially the most useful). No matter what you grow them with, they seem to produce almost random results, though, so there's no point in planting two Spiny Seeds at once. NOTES ON GROWING FLAT SEEDS: Flat Seeds also work like Spiny Seeds, but for the lesser produce (such as Pine o'Clocks and Peach Puppies). Their primary use is to grow White produce, but they can grow semi-rare produce of other colors, as well. Unfortunately, this mainly only works with the three basic colors (red, blue, and yellow), since the single seeds for orange, purple, and green give much more random produce. ELEMENTAL LINKS: Yep, produce grows faster if its respective elemental color matches its type. Specifically, if planted on the day of the seed color, a plant will have a +1 to the multiplier effect that elemental levels of the land give it (explained below). Here's a brief overview... Color/SeedType Day to Plant Blue/Round Jinn Yellow/Oblong Aura Red/Crooked Salamander Green/Big Dryad Orange/Small Gnome Purple/Long Undine White/Flat N/A Spiny/Black N/A Unfortunately, there's no Wisp or Shade day in this Seiken Densetsu game, so those seeds will almost always grow much slower. As well, elemental levels act as a multiplier for how fast plants grow: Element Level Multiplier 0/3 1x Growth 1/3 2x Growth 2/3 3x Growth 3/3 4x Growth This means that at full elemental level, produce grows about 4x faster than at no elemental affinity. Grown on the day that matches the seed type, a seed can grow 5 times faster than it would on the wrong day with no elemental level for the seed type. The growth rate is a bit strange for produce, but in general, their rarity reflects their growth time, so a rare produce will take about 5x longer to grow than a common one. With a growth rate of 5x, though, this usually makes little to no difference. A TRICK TO SPEED UP PRODUCE GROWTH: It's almost amusing that this tip was given jokingly in another FAQ (which I much appreciate for helping me get off the ground), but putting the Mana Tree next to your house, and your Orchards in a position where it can be adjacent to the Mana Tree, ups the growth rate of all produce monumentally (seeing as the Mana Tree has +3 to all elemental levels, and adjacent lands take on the base elemental levels of any given land). It's the difference between produce growing in 25 days and growing in 6 to 7 days. Yep, a lot less walking around on the world map, wishing that those damned things would hurry up and ripen. Oh, and if you're worried about produce spoiling from sitting on the tree or in your inventory too long, worry not. The stuff never goes bad, even if you leave it on the tree for 5 months, or in your inventory for that long, either. Oh, the wonders of Square logic... ------------------------- Buying Produce and Seeds ------------------------- You read right. You can buy the three most basic seed types, and several very useful produce, as well. The Bone Fortress (found during the Dragon Emperor's quests) has a small village, where a student from Geo will sell you not only the seeds, but Gold Clovers, Dialaurels, and so on. Take advantage of this shop, as it's practically the only way to get many rare produce and the three main seed types. That, and it's faster, too (albeit a good deal more spendy). ============= Raising Pets ============= Pets can be your most valuable allies in battle, if only for their synchro effects. For the most part, they can never get as potentially powerful as your character, nor can their AI be raised to anything that I would deem very useful, but those synchro effects...! Anyhow, here's the low-down on pets and how to make use of them. BASICS OF RAISING PETS: Here's some handy facts you should know about pets. GRAZING PETS: Letting the pets graze causes them to collect 1/2 of whatever experience you gain in battle. Of course, you yourself don't lose this 1/2 experience gained, so this is a good method to bring pitifully low-level monsters up to a decent level, and keep your main monster or golem with you. Just remember that you have to visit those pets from time to time to refill their feedboxes! FEEDING PETS: See the section on this below. SELLING PETS: You can sell your little nightmares, too. I suggest you do this to any pet you get, but don't want; it speeds things up a bit when trying to get that one pet you just can't seem to get. -------------- Egg Locations -------------- Pets aren't just given to you (well, unless they're demi-humans, and they join you if they are), you have to catch them first! Here's a quick and easy guide to getting any particular pet egg you're looking for. Note that the majority of these locations are in places where you first fight bosses at (with some exceptions, such as Lake Kilma). In the case of the exceptions, search around the dungeons, and you should find them in fairly short order. NOTE: You can actually keep going back in and out of any location where you encounter an egg to get more. You can also encounter elemental spirits in these locations (see Elemental Spirits and Coins for more info on that). NOTE: Eggs won't produce rare monsters (I'm not certain as to what monsters are considered rare yet, though) if they are collected too close to Home. Spacing lands out strategically when hunting for pets is a good idea. WHAT THEY BECOME: Below is the list of what each egg can turn into. They are finally in order of rarity. This is why it drops Pakkun Chocolate. GETTING THE DEMI-HUMANS: Okay, so you're probably wondering, "So how do I get a Chobin Hood or Goblin?" Well, you have to meet certain criteria for an area before you can have demi-humans join your party. Here's where they'll be, and what element levels you need at max in that area for them to appear. Demi-humans sell for 10 Lucre no matter their level, so don't bother getting one unless you're planning to keep it. Also, the Sahaguin has its own quest that you can tell Li'l Cactus, and he leaves your party after it. Just go back to the desert after completing his quest, and have him join your party for good. ------------- Feeding Pets ------------- Pets are a fickle lot, and are tough to raise without proper feeding. Here are some useful tips and facts to consider when feeding your little buddies. WHEN THEY EAT: Pets only eat when they level up. Not just when grazing, mind you. Any time they level up, if there's food in their feedbox, they eat it. Skipping a level is like making them skipping a meal, particularly if you're trying to raise the monster's stats. WHAT TO FEED THEM: There's a lot of produce you can feed pets, but it's hard to choose the best combos and still keep your pet from getting out of hand. There are a few good and bad traits (listed in the Produce section, as well) that determine their battle AI, so keep track of these when feeding them, as well. I've listed some handy suggestions for what to feed pets below the traits list. Behaviour Traits: Lazy - Your pet is sloth-like, and doesn't do much of anything Arrogant - Your pet goes off and starts attacking immediately, throwing caution into the wind Lonely - Your pet won't leave you alone; this can be good for Synchro Effects Scheming - Rather annoyingly, your pet tries to avoid enemies, and tends not to participate in battle Calm - Your pet will tend to target its enemies more strategically Aggressive - Your pet won't go off and attack at random, but rather, focus on attacking a single enemy relentlessly Friendly - Your pet will follow you in battle, and try to help you defeat the monster that you're trying to defeat, as well Some monsters don't seem to take on personality traits very well (most notably in my case, Polter Boxes). In this case, you can probably feed them just about anything, and not worry about unwanted personality factors. Of course, I've mainly only fed my Polter Boxes the same diets, so it may be that they actually DO take on personality traits. Other monsters seem to be sheer personality magnets (particularly Rabites), so be REALLY careful as to what you feed them. For Massive Luck Gain: 3 Gold Clovers Ideal Massive Stats Gain: 3 Toadstoolsheds For Massive Stats Gain (method 1): Peach Puppy Pine O'Clock Cornflower For Massive Stats Gain (method 2): Needlettuce Pine O'Clock Cornflower Balanced Stat Gain (works very well with Polter Boxes): Gold Clover Cornflower Needlettuce Defensive Boosting: Cabadillo Needlettuce Dialaurel ---------------- Pets and Profit ---------------- Pets can net you a pretty penny in this game, in more than one way. Selling them is usually not that profitable, but here are a few tricks that can get you filthy rich in short order. POLTER BOX: The Polter Box has a Synchro Effect of Rare Item, which means that if you kill a monster while it's nearby, the monster wilL ALWAYS drop an item. This means that you can get a lot of items, and even increase your chances of getting rare items as a result. But just selling the items isn't the only way to take advantage of this feature. Using this ability, you can force Stinger Bugs on the Luon Highway to drop Clear Feathers, and force Spiny Cones to drop WindCaps. Forge 4 Clear Feathers to a WindCap, and it becomes completely and utterly useless in battle, but is worth 26,643 Lucre! You can easily collect, build, and sell 10 altered WindCaps in an hour or so, giving you 266,430 Lucre! NOTE ABOUT POLTER BOXES: The Rare Item synchro effect really does give you rare items more often. What does that mean? Every monster drops from 3-8 different items (including Gems and Lucre and Candy/Pakkun Chocolate; they may not technically be items, but the game considers them to be), each one having a rarity "rank". The Polter Box messes the rarity table all up, and the most common item isn't dropped, the second-most common item becomes very rare, while rarer items become almost common. The exact effect is roughly as follows: W/O Polter Box: 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 W/ Polter Box: 3 4 5 6 7 8 2 Because of this, getting the most common item while in synch with a Polter Box is impossible, and getting the second item is almost impossible. It's still hard to get the rarest materials, of course, but the normally most common item is even HARDER to get. Oh, and if a monster only drops five items (for example), then item #2 will take item #5's place on the rarity scale. Below is an example of how this works. A simple breakdown of how it works: Prize 1 - 50% (or 1/2) chance to get Prize 2 - 25% (or 1/4) chance to get Prize 3 - 12.5% (or 1/8) chance to get Prize 4 - 6.25% (or 1/16) chance to get Prize 5 - 3.125% (or 1/32) chance to get Prize 6 - 1.5625% (or 1/64) chance to get Prize 7 - 0.78125% (or 1/128) chance to get Prize 8 - 0.390625% (or 1/256) chance to get POLTER BOX 2: Here's another great trick that can net you a lot of rare and valuable forging materials. Take a Polter Box with you, preferrably with high luck, and go fight in an area with Chess Knights. Chess Knights drop the rare and valuable Adamantite metal, by far the most valuable of all forging materials in the game. They drop it very rarely, but getting even just two pieces allows you to forge both a weapon and a suit of armor out of it. You can also get Giant's Horns from Chess Knights, which are very useful in the tempering process. SPRINGBALL: Not exactly a form of profit, but Springballs have the ultimate synchro effect: immortality! Unfortunately, it doesn't give THEM immortality, but it can be very useful against some of the bosses in the game, particularly in No Future mode. ============================ Elemental Spirits and Coins ============================ Elemental coins are the key to forging elemental attributes to weapons and armors, as well as forging instruments. You can only get coins from spirits who wander around in various locations in dungeons (usually where a boss is defeated during a game quest). NOTE: You can actually keep going back in and out of any location where you encounter spirits to get more coins. You can also encounter monster eggs in these locations (see Egg Locations for more info on that). The spirits appear according to their dominance in a land. The more dominant they are, the more often they appear. They won't appear at all if they don't have at least one level of essence on the land in question. The spirits seem to randomly pick songs that they like. I thought originally that each had two favorites, but in reality, they randomly pick one. My trick is to play one instrument, see if they like it, and if they do, start the whole orchestra playing. If they don't like it, or are just interested, then I move on to the next song. The number of instruments really does count, it seems... You want them to get close enough for you to touch them within about a second after having stopped playing the music. That's pretty much sitting right in front of the instrument, in my experience. With four instruments playing, though, that's usually no problem (unless they're all the same type of instrument). Spirits also have melodic "preferences". I haven't completely figured out how this works, but sometimes they prefer heavy percussion focus (read: flute and harp as Harmony line, drum and marimba as Melody line), and sometimes heavy woodwind/string focus (vice versa). Playing a song with 2 of each instrument, 1 per melodic tone, won't necessarily make a spirit do its little dance that indicates that it really likes the song. It might, though. Oh, and the attack power of the instrument DOES seem to have an effect... Not sure if the alignment of the instrument counts, though. What the spirit leaves is also completely random, but they leave silver more often than gold (obviously). Shade and Wisp seem to rarely leave gold. The number of instruments appears to have no effect on what they drop, only on how fast they approach you. What REALLY counts is whether or not they LIKE the tune you play. Even one instrument can cause a spirit to do their "likes it" dance. If that's the case, then you tend to get gold about 35% of the time (as opposed to 15% of the time). ========================== Abilities and Weapon STs ========================== Every weapon type has an extensive set of special techniques for it, and there are a good deal of abilities that make up those techniques. Below is outlined the abilities and STs of Legend of Mana. The number listed after a needed ability is how many battles you need to fight with that ability equipped to learn it. Bosses give 4 points of experience for abilities instead of 1. The listing of the weapon's name in the ability requirement section is how many battles you need to fight with that weapon equipped. This value also gets a boost of 4 from boss battles (instead of the normal 1). them doesn't matter, insofar far as I can tell), learning new STs is mostly a game of winning battles and waiting. So, if you go to the weakest dungeon in your particular game (Luon Highway or the Mekiv Caverns, more than likely), you'll be able to quickly gain all STs for whatever weapon you happen to be working with simply by slaughtering the weak monsters there and gaining ability experience. For multi-ability STs, if you don't learn the ST after about a dozen battles with some of the skills equipped on the T and O buttons, switch to the other ability or abilities. Above all else, have patience. The high-level abilities require the most time to learn (naturally), and it can be frustrating at times. By the time you reach your fourth or fifth weapon, the only thing you'll really need to do is fight 100 battles with that particular weapon equipped to learn all of its STs. ============================ Monster and Rare Items List ============================ In an effort to be as concise as possible (and provide a good guide on where to find the best forging materials), I've devised a rather useful list of the items which monsters drop least often, as well as what they drop otherwise. They are listed in the order of common items first, and the last item listed is the rarest. NOTE: All of these values were taken by using a Polter Box. As a result, some of the items listed as rarest are actually some of the most common items (since Polter Boxes just shift the rarity scale around; see the Polter Box section of Pets and Profit for more information). UPDATE: The list is now in the same order as the names are in the Monsters encyclopedia in-game. INTERESTING NOTE: Despite the common belief, even low-level monsters drop rare items. A few rare items don't show up at low levels (Rabites never drop their ears, and Lullabuds don't drop Flat Seeds, for example), but most of the top rare items are still dropped. Indeed, the rare items dropped seem to shift as the monster's level rises. High level monsters sometimes don't drop items that their low level counterparts do. Of course, the opposite is true, too. Forging weapons and armors is a lot like chemistry: one wrong move, and FOOM! There goes your glorious and wonderful modifications to your weapons/armor. NOTE: This section isn't done. Although I now understand most of the tempering process (for weapons, anyway), there is a LOT of information to cover. ----------------- How it All Works ----------------- The tempering system is quite complex, and I don't fully understand all of the rules behind it, but what I do know, I will try to explain. All items you can temper to weapons and armor have basic attributes that they can infuse into your equipment by tempering. Some items have more drastic effects than others, both good and bad, and some gain or lose power depending on what is being tempered, and what other objects have been tempered on recently. Overall, though, most temperings increase the powers and abilities of your equipment and items in some way. Each element has a counter element in tempering, and when one element is raised, its counter element falls. As well, each has an element opposite that slows their growth to nothing. Armor is much easier to compare than are weapons, since you don't have to add all of the values together. To find out how much defense a piece of armor will provide, take the results of the multiplication, and divide it by 64. For weapons, add all of the attribute scores up, then divide the result by 128. Decimal points are rounded down, but they still affect equipment in the tempering process. For the most part, Adamantite makes the most powerful basic weapons, DiorWood allows for the greatest power boosts from tempering, and DragonScales is the easiest to temper with. But once an essence reaches level 9, it becomes nigh impossible to raise its level higher. You can theoretically raise the essence levels up to a maximum essence level of 15, but by then raising essence levels is essentially impossible. Any further essence raising past level 9 is usually only possible through draining (which I have not covered in this guide). NOTE: The actual energy required to gain a level is: Material resistance * (2 ^ current essence level) This is why Wizard cards become less and less effective (since they only cut the energy costs by 60% of the current energy required, rounding up). ESSENCE LEVELING MECHANICS Essence levels are raised in a peculiar manner in Legend of Mana. Each turn that an essence is on an item, it can raise the level of the item's essence by 1, if enough energy exists to do so. Energy can be drained from any number of sources, but it is crucial for raising essence levels to a decent amount. Below is a list of items and their energy output, as well as the base elemental power of the coin and Mana Stone items. Another important factor in tempering essences (particularly if the two essences in question have a natural conflict with one another) is TP, or Taint Points. Taint Points literally drain energy from their conflicting essence, and transfer the energy to their native essence. Raising elements through draining is an excellent way to enhance the elemental properties of an item, but it does cause quite a headache when accidentally activated. The more taint points that exist for an element, the more energy will be drained per turn from its conflicting essence. Gold coins give two taint points, meaning that they can drain twice as much energy per "turn" from their opposing essence. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ As you can see, items and their respective cards have great effect on items. Some cards are very sensitive, too. For example, Nymph of Dawn cards will be shed from an item automatically if there are two different types of cards on the item other than their own. You can use this to your advantage, of course, seeing as Nymph of Dawn cards provide massive energy to whatever essence is tempered next. TEMPERING EFFICIENTLY: A GUIDE TO ESSENCE RAISING This is the true trick to master. As mentioned before, each essence levels up according to the natural resistance of the material in question, the number of supporting Wizard cards, and the amount of energy remaining for them to use. As well, any given elemental card can only raise the level of its respective essence 4 times (if enough energy is available to even do this) during its time present on the item in question. Effective tempering, therefore, involves making sure that you give enough energy for an essence to gain a level, but not so much energy that you waste gratuitous amounts of it. There are three important item types to consider when tempering essences, two of which have been mentioned so far: Wizard cards, the Nymph of Dawn card, and the Ancient Moon card. Wizard cards have already been explained, so I shall move on to give the details about how the Nymph of Dawn card works. The Nymph of Dawn releases 192 energy upon LEAVING the item in question (it also releases a hefy 96 energy when it's first tempered on), making a total of 288 energy that each Nymph of Dawn card eventually produces. The energy discharged can then be utilized by essences to gain levels. What does this mean? This means that Nymph of Dawn cards, although they provide no benefits of their own, can allow you to raise essences to far higher levels than would otherwise be possible. The Ancient Moon card is a very special, and very important, card. The effects of this card take place as soon as the card officially enters the item, and do not lose effect until the "turn" after they leave the item. Ancient Moon cards stop the draining and growth-halting effects that essences have on one another, and cause any essence tempered in to behave as though there were no other essences present on the item. This is, needless to say, a very useful ability. Without the Ancient Moon card, items cannot have all 8 essences tempered onto them. The best part about the Ancient Moon card is, it only has to be present for the initial tempering of the elemental essence in conflict. This means that you don't need an Ancient Moon card present at all times to keep your essences from consuming one another into oblivion. Much of Marcus and Anthony's FAQ appears to derive from this page, as well. ------------------------ Some Very Useful Combos ------------------------ I listed one simple combo in Pets & Profit (4 Clear Feathers tempered to a WindCap, worth 26,643 Lucre), but there are some other combos that I have recently discovered. -+-+-+-+-+-+- +20 to all Attributes (any material, except MaiaLead) -+-+-+-+-+-+- Needed: 2 non-Spiny Seeds or 2 Dryad Silver 3 Sulpher 1 Needle or Needlettuce 10 Spiny Seeds 1 Poison Fang Tempering Order: Dryad Silver/Seed Sulpher x3 Dryad Silver/Seed Needle/Needlettuce Spiny Seed x2 Poison Fang Spiny Seed x8 Extended Effects: ForbiddenRing Effect (Ring only) (optional): Ear of Wheat Lilipods Higher Defense (armor-type items only) (optional): Needle/Needlettuce Lilipods Alternate: Dryad Silver/Seed Sulpher x3 Dryad Silver/Seed Needle/Needlettuce Spiny Seed Poison Fang Spiny Seed Needle/Needlettuce or Ear of Wheat Odd Meat x9 Lilipods (for higher defense) NOTES: This combination is extremely useful. You can easily use this process before varnishing a weapon or armor to make it into a stat-raising super- weapon or armor. It's simple, affordable, and best of all, it doesn't take that many materials to forge. If you're a miser about Spiny Seeds, though, then you lose out big-time. Don't fret, you can get Spiny Seeds easily from Lullabuds. Just temper them on some armor, you won't regret it. ---------------- -+-+-+-+-+-+- Tempering Weapons for Added Power -+-+-+-+-+-+- Needed: Any weapon that focuses on pure force (hammer, glove, etc.) 3 Holy Waters 1 Lilipods 1 Giant's Horn Alternative: Any weapon that focuses on slashing/piercing power (bow, spear, etc.) 3 Bumpkins 1 Lilipods 1 Sharp Claw Alternative 2: For axes only 3 Ash 1 Lilipods 1 Scissors Tempering Order: Holy Water/Bumpkin/Ash x3 Lilipods Giant's Horn/Sharp Claw/Scissors NOTES: A simple but very effective way to make weapons more powerful. This can usually be used as a varnishing process at the end of a tempering to make weapons up to approximately 285% more powerful. Take note that some materials have innate essences, and as such, the Lilipods aren't necessary (since any item tempered on without a Mystic Card produces the innate elemental card for them; examples of this are all wood types and Coral). Also, the material used for a weapon determines the best finishing method for swords. ---------------- -+-+-+-+-+-+- Full Recipe: Cardless Tempering for Dragonscales Weapons -+-+-+-+-+-+- This is the only full recipe I'm going to be offering up, so make good use of it. This recipe will give you the highest possible essence levels for cardless tempering on DragonScales. DO NOT try this recipe with any material other than DragonScales! IMPORTANT NOTE: The various odd items (Cherry Bombs, Rhinoloupe, etc.) were chosen for their exact energy outputs, and for the fact that they don't produce any cards. They can be replaced by any cardless item of equal or greater energy output. Some items (such as Flaming Quills) were chosen since, although they would normally produce a card, they don't produce a card under the circumstances where they're used. These types of items can also be used as substitutes, but be VERY careful that you don't add them when their card requirements are met! If you want things to be simple, then replace all of the cardless items with Flaming Quills for the first 7 essences, and use Dialaurels for Salamander. Use the blunt recipe for a Staff, Hammer, Glove, Flail, Sword, or 2HSword. Use the sharp recipe for a Knife, Spear, or Bow. Use the force recipe for an Axe or 2HAxe. Blunt: Sharp: Force: 1 Spiny Seed 1 Spiny Seed 3 Ash 1 Holy Water 1 Bumpkin 1 Lilipods 1 Odd Meat 5 Odd Meat 1 Scissors 2 Holy Water 2 Bumpkin 1 Lilipods 1 Lilipods 1 Giant's Horn 1 Sharp Claw The end result: a weapon with at least 350 attack power, and with either +9, +3, or +1 to all stats. Not bad for such a simple recipe. Note that I have tested this recipe in full for all weapon types; it works perfectly in all cases, as long as you follow the recipe's instructions exactly. ================ Building Golems ================ Ah, golems... I never liked them much in the other games of the series, but then again, the only time you find a golem in Seiken Densetsu 2 or 3 is when you have to fight one, so... Anyway, golems can be slightly more useful than a pet, but (IMO) nowhere near as useful in terms of Synchro Effects. NOTE: This section isn't done. Golems take forever to build, so I'm avoiding them with a passion. Don't expect this section to ever get done. --------------------------------- The Weapons and Armors of Choice --------------------------------- Anything that does a lot of damage or gives a hefty defense bonus is a good idea. This usually means AltenaAlloy or Adamantium armors, and weapons that have been tempered into super-weapons. It seems like a terrible waste of perfectly good weapons and armor to me... ------------------------ Good Logic Block Combos ------------------------ Seeing as I can't make any good combos so far, I don't have anything for this section. Maybe when I get some decent equipment to make the combos with, I will update this section. =========== Conclusion =========== Legend of Mana is a bit peculiar, in many ways that most games aren't. It draws some people in, and disappoints others. Obviously, it drew me in quite grandly, but I was actually disappointed in it at first. I had expected a stable plot and a much more rigid system, as per most Square games. But I was surprised (and later, delighted) to find that the system was extremely variable in structure, and that I controlled just about everything. After my third new game, I finally realized that what I had here was a game that was enjoyable for the mere fact that it WAS so possible to customize in so many respects. And I realized as I came to this conclusion that the reason that I'd come to like the game so much was because of all of the (somewhat incomplete but quite informative) FAQ's out there. The rest is history.
