These are the questions that pop up time and again about this game. If something's baffling you, it may well be in here.
Q. Why does everybody in the valley hate me, no matter how many gifts I give them?
Q. The town's empty! All the shops are closed! What's going on?
Q. How come I can only play the memory matching game at the casino?
Q. How come I can't get married?
You must meet some additional requirements for some of the other bachelorettes. Leia requires you to have the Pond built, the Goddess requires you to save all Sprites and ship out at least 1 of all types of items (as well as accomplishing numerous other tasks), and the Witch Princess has a laundry list of naughty deeds you have to do.
You cannot marry either the Goddess or the Witch Princess in the US version, because the game does not keep track of certain information that those two require.
Q. How do I unlock the hot springs?
If you're married, you obviously can't do that event any more. If that's the case, you'll have to wait until your child is born, at which point the hot spring will be built.
To unlock the second hot spring, jump into and out of the first hot spring 200 times. You don't have to spend any actual time in it, so you can unlock the second spring as soon as you've unlocked the first.
Q. Unlocking Sprites is hard! Which 60 are the easiest?
Q. How come I can't fish anything up?
Q. How do I catch the Bottle? It never shows up!
Q. My horse never gets any hearts! What gives?
Q. How come my animals don't like me?
Q. How come I can't enter the Cooking Festival any more?
Q. I didn't get any Buckwheat Flour from the end-of-year festival! What gives?
Q. How come the Necklace doesn't show up on my mining list?
Q. How can I make lots of money fast?
Q. How do I split items out of stacks of items?
Q. How do I get the Fishing Rod?
Q. What version of the game do I have? How can I check?
ABCEN0J13 - Version 1.0
It's unknown at this point if the European version has multiple releases yet, and the Japanese version numbers are similarly unknown.
Q. HOW I MINE FOR FISH!?
Here you'll find everything you need to know about the crops you can plant in HM DS. What would you like to know?
What seeds can I buy?
What seeds can I buy?
Here's what you can get, where, and when.
A. Because you're littering. Any time you toss an item on the ground and it vanishes, if you're not on your farm, it counts as littering. Every time you litter, everybody's FP with you goes down by 1, and the girls all lose 200 LP. So don't litter.
A. There's a bug in the US version that causes this to happen when starting a new game sometimes. Just restart the game, and try inputting different/shorter names. Or if you're partial to your current names, try throwing the Dog Ball into the shipping bin or the watering hole; this apparently works.
A. Because you have the European version of the game. Blackjack and Poker were removed by Rising Star Games to keep the maturity rating of the game low.
A. There are 5 requirements for marriage no matter who you want to marry: you must see all 4 heart events for the girl (black, purple, blue, and yellow), the girl must have a red heart (60,000 or more LP), you must own the Big Bed, you must save the Harvest Goddess by gathering at least 60 Sprites, and you need to use the Blue Feather to propose (bought at the Supermarket).
A. Perform Flora's blue heart event. If you're playing the For Girl version, this is done by getting Flora's FP up to 250 or more. The trigger is the same in both cases: visit the waterfall area from the entrance near Vesta's farm around 11:40PM.
A. The entire lumber team (except Fen), Kali, Johnny, Mouton, Boohoo, Beta, Aiylee, Forest, Fraw, Ridge, Veggie, Kevin, Kamar, Moor, Vail, Blue, Paige, Fry, Pedro, Fisher, Yacht, Riviera, Reese, Anime, Powery, Koto, Spirity, Souly, Ceruleano, Chorori, Walter, Roli, Karaf, Eviran, Owen, Guts, Jackie, Jet, Roller, Jum, Tep, Hops, Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune are the easiest.
A. Because a glitch exists in the US (and probably European) version of HM DS that does not allow you to catch anything between 9AM and 6PM. Just fish before or after those times, preferrably in your house via a Necklace accessory.
A. Patience is the first and most important part of the process; Bottles can take a bit to show up. The second important thing (which isn't usually mentioned, but really should be) is that you must use the Mystrile power level to catch Bottles! The Mystrile power level is when your character's face is red and a vein is popping out of their forehead. Any lower or higher power level, and you won't be able to catch a Bottle at all. Other than that, make sure it's spring, and if you have a non-Japanese release of the game, be sure it's early in the morning or late at night.
A. Unfortunately, due to a glitch in the US (and probably European) version of HM DS, the horse never gains any hearts. Fortunately, the horse's affection for you does not impact anything at all.
A. Animals gain affection in HM DS very slowly. It can take upwards of 2 years for chickens and ducks to get 10 hearts, and cows and sheep usually take a good year and a half.
A. The US (and probably European) version has a glitch where whatever you submit the first year remains submitted for all years afterwards. There is no work-around for this.
A. The original US release has a glitch that doesn't let you get Buckwheat Flour, ever. The only way to get any in that case is to use a cheat device such as an Action Replay to add the item to your inventory.
A. The original US release has a glitch that doesn't record if you've dug up any Necklaces. There is no work-around for this, and it's one of the reasons why you cannot marry the Goddess in the original US version.
A. See the Money-Making Tricks guide for info on that.
A. Lightly tap the item with the stylus, so it has a light-colored border around it, then tap an empty inventory slot. 1 item will be split off of the stack. This is much easier to do from one of the storage containers (cabinet, refridgerator, etc.).
A. You need to speak to Galen and Nina both at least once before you can. When you talk to them doesn't matter, so it can even be just before you activate the event. Visit Galen and Nina's house (it's in the lower right corner of town) right around noon, and be sure you have no tool equipped. Galen should give you his fishing rod during the event that ensues. If he doesn't, first make sure you have no tool equipped, then try speaking to both of them, leaving the house, and re-entering.
A. On the back of every DS cart is a production number that indicates what run it's from. Here's what the numbers mean for the US versions of HM DS:
ABCEN0J22 - Version 1.05
ABCEN1J09 - Version 1.1
ABCEN1J12 - Version 1.15
ABCEN1J22 - Version 1.2
A. Buy a PSP and Tales of the World: Radiant Mythology, then go to Frosthollow, near Gavada. You can mine for fish to your heart's content there. But you can't mine for fish in HM DS. Fishing pole catches only, sorry.

How do I care for the seeds I plant?
Caring for crops is simple. First, you must till the earth for the seeds to be planted in using the Hoe. Each seed bag holds 9 squares' worth of seeds, which will be placed around where you use them in a 3x3 square. Trees take up a 2x2 space for the seeds (but a 4x3 space overall when fully grown), and must be planted from the top left corner. Once the land is prepared, you can sow the seeds onto the tilled land. Seeds need to be watered once daily.
As the crops begin to mature as the days pass, you will see them develop leaves and eventually sprout fruit or vegetables. You still need to water them even at this point, though crops that do not regrow do not need to be watered after being picked. Trees do not need to be watered once they're no longer seeds.
Once crops can be harvested, simply stand in front of them and pick them up like you would any item. You can then eat the crop, sell it, store it, make it into seeds via the Seed Maker (see Makers), or even just throw it away if you want. After a crop has been harvested, if it is a regrowing crop, it will continue to bear fruits or vegetables as long as you continue to water it, until the season ends.
Crops stop growing and die off when their growing season ends. Crops grown in a basement (see Basements) will not die until you change the seasonal sun in their basement, or until the basement is destroyed somehow (usually by a storm or blizzard).
How do I level up crops?
The basics of leveling up crops is to sow multiple bags of seeds onto the same tilled squares of land. Every time you sow an additional bag of seeds over a patch of seeds, there's a non-cumulative 33% chance of the crop that grows from those seeds will be one level higher than the seeds used. Seeds planted in this way must all be of the same level and type to level up crops. For best results, sow 4 to 5 bags of seeds over the same plot.
To level up crops beyond level 2, you must have a Seed Maker (see Makers). Simply insert harvested crops into the Seed Maker, and it will output one bag of seeds per crop put into it. Again, for best results, convert 4 to 5 crops per harvest per plot of crops.
There is little else to leveling crops besides the simple process of planting multiple bags of the crop, converting some of the leveled-up produce into seeds, and then re-planting those seeds where the previous crops were. Do take note that you can lose your entire leveling chain of crops if a storm destroys them or you plant too late in the season for the crops to mature, and you don't have any spare leveled seeds.
Leveled-up crops sell for a multiplier of the base price of the crop. This multiplier is the crop's level squared. So level 2 crops sell for 4 times as much (2^2, or 2*2), level 3 crops sell for 9 times as much (3^2, or 3*3), level 4 crops sell for 16 times as much (4^2, or 4*4), and so on. A level 100 crop (the maximum level) sells for 10,000 times as much as the original crop.
For best results, you should level crops in the basement greenhouses (see Basements). You don't have to worry about missing the seasonal deadline in them, and storms are entirely avoidable by simply saving every night just before you go to bed, and re-loading if the next day weather report when you wake up is a storm.
How do I raise mushrooms?
Mushrooms cannot be raised until you own a Mushroom Shed. You can have Gotz build you one (see Special Buildings). You can grow three types of mushroom in the shed: Shiitake, Matsutake, and Toadstool. To grow the latter two, you need a Maker Shed (see Special Buildings) and the Seed Maker (see Makers).
To grow mushrooms once you have the shed, you need to place a piece of Wooden Lumber on any of the 6 palettes in the shed. Then sow the mushroom spores onto the lumber from below it, and water. You must water mushrooms daily, just like any other crop.
Mushrooms will grow to an additional size level if left unpicked for 4 to 6 days (depending on the type; Matsutake take longer, Shiitake and Toadstool take less time). The size levels and their selling prices are as follows:
Mushroom Type | Small | Medium | Large |
Shiitake | 50G | 80G | 120G |
Matsutake | 350G | 500G | 800G |
Toadstool | 100G | 130G | 160G |
What else should I know about crops?
You can plant trees with only one tile of blank land between them and still get crops. However, trees will not grow to their full height if they're planted right next to one another.
Trees will continue to produce fruit for as long as you let them stay standing, though storms and blizzards can knock them down. A tree must grow for at least a full year before it can bear fruit, meaning that you cannot get any Bananas, Oranges, Apples, or non-wild Grapes before year 2.
Seeds never go bad, unlike real life, so don't worry if you've been holding onto them for years; they'll still grow if you plant them. Crops never rot, either (excepting when they die on the plant as the season changes), so you can carry them around in your rucksack or put them in the fridge for as long as you want, and they'll never go bad or lose any potency.
Crops are one of the easiest way to consistently make large sums of money in the long run with relatively little effort, via crop leveling. If planned ahead, it's possible to make over well over 1 billion G in a single season from level 100 crops.

How do I get more animals on my farm?
In order to purchase animals, you must first have an appropriate shed built for them. For chickens and ducks, you need Bird Sheds, and cows and sheep require Animal Sheds. To get these built, you must contact Gotz (see Sheds). You also need to have a Pond built to be able to purchase and raise ducks.
Each shed can hold up to 4 animals. In order to hold more, you must purchase additional sheds. You can only have a maximum of 7 sheds between the two types, but you can have any number of each type. If you plan to unlock all of the red Sprite team, you'll need to build 5 Bird Sheds, fill them, then sell 4 of your birds off and demolish one of the Sheds so you can build 3 Animal Sheds and get 10 livestock for unlocking one of the other Sprites.
You cannot own more animals than you have room for. If you try to impregnate an animal or hatch an egg when you're at full capacity, you won't be able to do so (and will waste an egg/Miracle Potion in the process). If you destroy an animal barn while birds or livestock are still in them, those animals will be killed. So be sure to sell off the animals in a shed BEFORE you have Gotz demolish it.
Is there anything else I should know about animals?
You can purchase the Touch Glove, which lets you rub animals, from either Yodel Ranch or the Poultry Farm for 2000G. It's advisable that you purchase it as soon as you can, as you cannot raise animal affection at any sort of reasonable pace otherwise, and cannot get medium or large Milk or Wool without it.
Animals gain heart levels every 100LP (Love Points). They max out at 1000LP (10 hearts). Normal actions like hugging, talking, riding, whistling, and brushing without the Touch Glove net you 1LP. The Touch Glove nets you up to 3LP from animals when petting (see the charts above for the minimum scores), and up to 3LP when brushing too (1LP for less than 3000 points, 2LP for 3000 to 7000 points, and 3LP for over 7000 points).
The number of hearts or skulls accumulated in the top right corner during the petting minigame determines how easy it is to raise your points. At 2 or 3 hearts, points go up at a rate of about 500 per second. At 1 heart to 1 skull, points go up at a rate of about 250 points per second. At 2 skulls, points go up at a rate of about 100 points per second, and the minigame ends automatically if you get 3 skulls in the top corner. If that happens, you get 0LP, no matter what your score was. Note that points gained per second is about 2 times what's listed here when petting cows and sheep, and can go lower than that if you pet animals slowly.
Animals will start to die off after several years, of natural causes. Chickens and ducks start to die after about 5 years, sheep start to expire around their 6th year, and cows often snuff it around age 7. Sell animals before they die, as the entire valley will lose a lot of FP and LP with you if you let an animal die on your farm, regardless of the causes.

How do I use Bird and Animal Sheds?
Once you have ordered a Bird or Animal Shed from Gotz, you can put any appropriate animals you have purchased into them. To do this with birds, just carry them into a Bird Shed and put them down inside of it. For livestock, you'll need to push them into the Animal Shed's door. It may be easier if you use a bell to lure them to the shed first.
Bird Sheds are equipped with a feed spout for bird feed, so you don't have to worry about buying anything for that. Just grab feed from the spout, put it in however many feed bins as you have birds for (which ones don't matter, as long as you fill enough for each bird), and then put the spare feed back in the feed spout. To incubate more birds, place any bird egg on the small incubator along the left wall, and in a few days, it will hatch. You cannot buy ducks to put in a Bird Shed until you have the Pond built.
Animal Sheds do not come equipped with a fodder spout until you have a Silo built. Once you do have a silo, the operations for the fodder spout are identical to the Bird Shed feed spout. As with the Bird Shed, you need only fill enough feed bins for as many animals as you have, no matter which ones. Pregnant livestock require you to feed them in the special bin in the top-left corner of the Animal Shed. To impregnate livestock, use an appropriate Miracle Potion on them.
How do I use special buildings like the Mushroom Shed?
The Mushroom Shed and Maker Shed work a little differently from normal buildings. After you have them built, you'll need to set them up for them to actually do anything.
The Mushroom Shed is utilized by first grabbing some Wood Lumber and placing it on the palettes in the shed; you can have up to 6. Then you need mushroom seeds (or spores, more properly, though the game doesn't call them that). You can purchase Shiitake Seeds from Vesta's after you have a Mushroom Shed, and you can use a Seed Maker (see below) to get Toadstool and Matsutake Seeds. Just stand right below the lumber on a palette, and sow the seeds from there. You need to water any mushrooms you're growing daily.
The Maker Shed is pretty easy to use, just expensive. To get Maker Machines for it, you first must have the shed built. Then you can call Blacksmith Saibara and have him build any of the Maker Machines for you (Mayonnaise, Cheese, Yogurt, Yarn, Seed, Can Food). The first 4 Makers just convert common produce (Eggs, Milk, Wool) into more valuable produce. The Seed Maker lets you convert any crop into a new bag of seeds. And the Can Food Maker lets you sell anything put in it for 50% more (except Tickets, which always sell for a set price).
How do I use basements?
Basements act as year-round greenhouses, and very convenient ones at that since you can tend to them without even leaving your house.
Once a basement is built, you need to put a seasonal Sun item on the pedestal to grow crops. As should be obvious, you can only plant seeds of the season of the Sun you put on the pedestal. Gotz will give you a random Sun when he finishes each basement, so you can save before leaving your house on the day he completes a basement, and reload if he doesn't give you the Sun you want. You can also forage more seasonal Suns from the third mine (Spring Suns show up on floors ending in 1, Summer Suns on floors ending in 2, Fall Suns on floors ending in 3, and useless Winter Suns on floors ending in 4).
Each basement has room for 6 3x3 plots crammed right next to each other, or 3 3x3 plots spaced from each other and 2 3x3 plots right next to each other; I suggest you go for 6 3x3 plots instead of 5. The basements behave as normal field space, so there's really nothing special to do besides plant, water, and harvest. Basements are excellent for crop leveling.
Any non-Gold Lumber basement can potentially be destroyed in a storm, so take care. Also, any higher basement that collapses takes out every basement below it too. So if you lose basement #2, you also lose basement #3, and if you lose basement #1, you lose all of them. Naturally, you can rebuild the basements if they collapse.
What else should I know about buildings?
Any building built out of fodder can potentially collapse at any time. Any building made of wood will all but assuredly collapse during storms. Stone buildings besides the house can potentially collapse in storms. Gold lumber buildings can never collapse. Also, the bathroom and toilet cannot ever collapse, no matter what you build them out of.
You can also have Gotz destroy existing buildings for 1,000G, which takes 1 day. Any animals inside a building you plan to destroy will be killed, save the dog, cat, or horse (who cannot be put inside buildings besides the stable anyway). These animals will just appear at the front of your farm if they're in a building that gets destroyed. If you destroy the Maker Shed, you lose any Makers that were in it and have to re-purchase them. You cannot have Gotz destroy the stable, the watering hole, your house, the Vacation Villa, or Takakura's house.
Once you have a Silo built, cut grass and purchased fodder automatically goes into it. Each of the lumber bins also sends any harvested or purchased lumber immediately to those bins, instead of into your rucksack. Once you have even 1 Bird Shed built, all purchased bird feed goes into the Bird Shed feed spouts.

How do I unlock and use TV Shopping?
TV Shopping works differently from other shops. Once you've unlocked Venus (by buying items from Karen's shop for 10 days overall), you can order items off of TV Shopping. A new item is offered every 7 days, or 7 days after you purchase an item. The items offered are determined by your current house upgrade level, and are offered in a more or less set order. Any time <-> is used instead of -> below, that means that the order of those two items can be swapped. When a long sequence of them appears, that means those items are offered in random order amongst each other.
House Level 1: Table -> Clock -> Tool Box <-> Ornament Box
House Level 2: Cabinet <-> Refridgerator -> Kitchen -> Pot <-> Frying Pan <-> Oven <-> Steamer <-> Mixer
House Level 3: Big Bed
Any time you upgrade your house, the game will change what items are offered to the current level of your house, and any items you haven't bought yet for the previous upgrade will be offered after all of the items for the current upgrade have been offered. So, for example, if you upgrade your house as fast as possible, you could potentially be offered items in this order:
Table -> Clock -> Big Bed -> Cabinet -> Refridgerator -> Kitchen -> Frying Pan -> Pot -> Mixer -> Oven -> Steamer -> Ornament Box -> Tool Box
Obviously, this won't always be how it works out, but it is one possible offering order you could get. Once you own all TV Shopping items, the show will simply loop through the Sprite-only joke items forevermore.
How do I use Van's shop?
Van's shop, besides selling you items, also lets you sell your own items to him. How this works is simple: you first select the quantity you want to sell (One, Many, or All), then you select what you want to sell (and how many, if you choose to sell Many), and then Van will offer you a price. How much he offers is between 100% and 200% of an item's shipping value.
When selling multiple items to Van at once, he'll give you a different price for each item, so it's actually harder to get a killer deal on multiple items than it is on single items. Certain items cannot be sold to Van, such as a few accessories (most of them in the Girl version), the 6 core tools, the blessed tools, and anything cursed.
What else should I know about shops?
There's nothing else really of note about shopping. Just be sure you can afford what you're buying, and that what you want to buy is actually available, and you shouldn't have any troubles.

What special things are in the mines?
Besides the items you can dig up and break out of rocks, you can also find some other travelers and inhabitants of the mines. In mine 3, on floor 255, you'll find Keria. On floors ending in 00 (and floor 65,535) in the fourth mine, Mayor Thomas will offer to sell you items at ridiculously high prices.
There's not much else to the mines besides that.
What else should I know about mining?
Nothing else comes to mind about mining.

How do I cook?
How do I cook?
Cooking in HM DS is very simple. First, you obviously need a kitchen. To get one, you'll need to order it off of TV Shopping after you have the first house upgrade. Then you'll need to order utensils off of TV Shopping so you can make new dishes.
To cook, just go into your kitchen and use it. First you choose a utensil to use, then you choose your ingredients, and then you cook. That's all there is to it. You can also opt to work with a recipe you've already completed, and make variations on those recipes too.
What can I cook?
There are a total of 134 recipes you can cook in HM DS.

How do I fish?
How do I fish?
You can fish by using the fishing pole you get from Galen. To get it, just unequip your current tool and visit Galen and Nina's house on a Saturday afternoon, and be sure you've talked to both of them beforehand. Galen will give you the pole.
Once you have the pole, you can cast it into the water like you would use any other tool. When you get a bite, a sound will play and a ! will appear over your character's head. That's your cue to pull the line up. What you can catch and how long you have to wait to catch it is determined by what your fishing rod's current level is.

In non-Japanese releases of the game, you'll only ever catch anything while fishing between the hours of 6PM and 9AM, due to a bug. Other than that, fishing is very straightforward.

How do I use the Sprites' services?
You can hire out any of the first seven teams of Sprites once you've rescued at least 1 member from said team. To do so, visit the Sprite Company Tree between 10AM and 6PM, and talk to Guts. You can hire a team for 1, 3, or 7 days in a row, and you can hire out in advance for when your current team stops work. Sprite teams require you to pay them in casino medals, so you can't hire any Sprites until after you find Roller.
You can also shop and buy casino prizes from the Sprite Company if you've rescued Jet and Roller, respectively. Additionally, you can give Sprites on the various teams gifts by checking the dolls for the teams on the right counter. Sprites that like you charge you less medals for their serves.
What else should I know about Harvest Sprites?
Harvest Sprites lose a little affection for you each day they work for you. Every time you save all 12 members of any of the 7 work teams, you can attend a dance party with that team by leaving your house after 9PM. Note that Sprite dance parties take all night, so save before you do this.

How do I find and use cursed tools?
You find the cursed tools in the third mine. You can only ever have 1 of any given cursed (or blessed) tool. Cursed tools can potentially be dug up on floors 24, 35, 48, 52, 68, 71, 87, 99, 106, 118, 124, 135, 142, 153, 162, 178, 185, and 197.
To uncurse a tool, equip it, call the church when it's open, then have the curse undone for 100,000G. The tool will drain far less stamina and fatigue that way, and you'll be able to equip and remove it at will.
Is there anything else I should know about tools?
You can throw most types of tools away in the garbage can next to your bed, though this is by and large pointless. Tools all require stamina or fatigue to use.
The Milker and Clippers both level up after 674 uses. This use count is consistent for all levels. The Milker will auto-level after every use once you hit level 1 in early releases of the US version, and the Clippers won't level up at all in those versions.
That's it for tools.
Here you'll find everything you could possibly want to know about accessories.

The Cursed (and by extension, Blessed and Large) versions of accessories can be obtained by digging them up from the third mine (see the next section for details).
How do I find and use cursed accessories?
You can dig up cursed accessories from the third mine. There is no limit to how many copies of a cursed accessory you can hold at one time. Cursed accessories can potentially be dug up on floors 324, 335, 348, 352, 368, 371, 387, 399, 406, 418, 424, 435, 442, 453, 462, 478, 485, 497, 724, 735, 748, 752, 768, 771, 787, 799, 806, 818, 824, 853, 862, 878, 885, and 897.
To uncurse an accessory (or stack of accessories), equip it, call the church when it's open, then have the curse undone for 100,000G. The accessory will have a positive effect that way, and you'll be able to equip and remove it at will.
