The Ultimate Square
Leveling System

Final Fantasy II was the first game to ever use its system. In this system, there are no "levels" that you gain. Instead, you improve skills by using them, and your characters will improve over time as you use them in battle. This allowed for a true challenge, but made it difficult to get useful characters as quickly as you can in most RPG's.

As FF2 has no classes or levels, it allows for a new, risque way of role-playing by enhancing only by repeated use, and not by experience points. Despite it's broadness, the FF2 leveling system caused it to become a weaker game than its sequels.
