The Ultimate Square
Final Fantasy I History
When it was initially released in Japan, Final Fantasy I brought on a wave of fanfare. It was a very interesting game, as the player could choose who would be in his party, and what they would be able to do. The game had almost infinite replay value, as so many combinations existed to try. The story wasn't incredible and the enemies weren't fantastic, the interface lacked the flair of some other games, but the gameplay was what drew people in.
In 1988, Square decided to port Final Fantasy I to the US. In doing so, they gave the US a new reason to buy a Nintendo. The game became a hit instantly, and sold like crazy. Americans seemed to enjoy the freedom as much as the Japaneese did.
Today, it is seen as a hallmark of console RPG's, and many people continue to play it, despite the fact that there are better games out, with better graphics, sound and music.
